I have just bought a new 78 Turbo Diesel troopie. I am told it has a 100 series gearbox. Having had a 75 series for 13 years and had the gearbox clap out at 370k kms I was told that the 100 series box was better. I have just been informed by a gearbox rebuilder in the Darwin area that they sell oodles of re-built 100 series boxes, because of the 3 piece shaft arrangement flogging out. The mechanic said that I would be lucky to get 120k ie just out of warrantee period. He also said that Toyota knew about this and was doing nothing.

Any comments?

I assume the three piece shaft you refer to is the sleeve arrangement to the transfer that shears off. This has now been replaced by a modified shaft which has the sleeve as part of the shaft. no more problems now. Vehicles after Sept 03 production already have this. If it does go out of warranty Toyota as are most manufacturers are usually pretty good but don't go in all guns blazing or you will just get everyones hackcles up and you are then least likely to get anyone to go out of your way for anyone.

Anyway you said you have a TURBO so I assume it id the factory turbo and if so you don't have this box anyway. You have a heavy duty box which to my knowledge hasn't been giving any problems.

Why were you talking top the "rebuilder"anyway - have you already got a problem?Obviously he is unaware of the mods available to the non turbo vehicle and that yours has a stonger box anyway.

I get annoyed with these experts that are armed with a little knowledge putting bad thoughts in peoples minds.

Thank you David for the info.
The guy I spoke with works in a 4WD spares place. and I guess he had seen a bit of movement on rebuilt boxes

The car is Factory fitted Turbo ie 24valve model and manufactured 7/03
but I am pleased to hear that the box is heavy duty. :)
thanks again. R

You did very well to get 370k out of a Troopy gearbox in your 75 series, mine lasted 110k's, only private use and the heaviest thing it ever towed was a 500kg camper trailer.

Mines done 420k, with only 4th and 5th needing replacement at the 300k mark, and it had done some serious towing.

Yes. I put Slick50 in the box and engine at 100k. I do quite a bit of bush driving (work in Aboriginal communities) in the Barkly Tablelands area SE of Tennant Creek. Often towing 6*4 box trailer with gear.
When home(DWN) I often towed my tractor(2 tonne) on a flatbed trailer.
Super car, but I really Appreciate the extra grunt when overtaking roadtrains when travelling from Katherine to Darwin(hilly).
The only beaf I have at the moment is that the rear springs are a bit soft. Have bought re-tempered(cold shaped) with an extra leaf so that the car will travel level with a load - which is nearly always.
Am planning to do the Gunbarrell in May 04. So will see how it goes.

Gday
Toyota did all sorts of silly things to get batter shift quality in the 100...(like putting in a Prado r150 box behind the 1hz) it has been known to fail, especially with turbos and accessories weighing the car down.
Your t/d box in a 100 aswell as the 78-9 is a h151 (as in the 80 series) and these are very strong and reliable. Your particular box is slightly different as far as ratios go, but friends have these behind their 80 turbos with 300k's on them, still going strong.
BE AWARE that the oil in these boxes can effect the shift quality, a good one to use is Castrol VMX-M or Valvoline transgrid (is it). They dont like std gear oil, and will become notchy and hard to shift if you are unaware of this.

My 2001 HZJ78 RV has the R151F box, the same as a mate's 80 series. Anyone care to comment on the differences between H151 / R151F / R150 boxes? (Or give a link to some info)

Cheers

Hi
The r151 box is originally from a Supra, but found its way into the prado and lately the 1hz powered cruisers. The 80 series had h150 h151 boxes, but the 100/78/79 came with r151 in the 1hz powered models only.
Really good to shift, but not as strong as a h box.
The h box can be put in these cruisers if a h transfer is obtained with the 5 speed. Guy i know put a 80 series 1hdft motor and 5 speed/transfer in his hzj105....o what a feeling
