Gday all, I am well aware of the advantages of a snorkel for diesels, but what about for their petrol counterparts? Are they worth it? will they make riveer crossings safer or is there still more work to be done? If so, what else do I have to do to a 1993 80 Series 4.5L?

Roscoe.

G'day Roscoe,
a petrol will hydraulic from sucking in water just like a diesel will - it just needs a bit more water becase the compresssion is lower. In either case it can be very expensive. I'm not camiliar with the toyota 4.5L but in general the other problems with water and petrol egines is shorting out the inition, or possibly in modern engines the computer.
In short, if you're going to cross rivers, fit a snorkel and waterproof the electrics.
Cheers, Alex.

Bro
Be careful, these cruisers dont like air rams on snorkels, as it effects the flow meter and makes the motor run rich, and use fuel. Having said that, a snorkel is cheap insurance if you do cross the occasional river.
It doesnt replace the need to fit a blind over the front, because if you drown the ignition leads, the game will be up.

So, if you fit a blind & make a 'bow-wave', do you still need a snorkle?

Usually no. If you make and stay behind that wave where it is relatively shallow, you wont need a snorkel. But, if you loose traction or if it gets deeper than u thought, a snorkel will be cheap insurance.
Even if you get hung up,in the middle of the river, and the motor stops, the snorkel will have saved you that bad electrical problem where the motor has got a leg out of bed and pushed through the block, breaking off the alternator.
The blind also assists in making the wave and keeping water from spraying onto the motor and all those extra bits under there.
Happy New Year everyone...

Snorkels are great for making you venture into deaper water and getting you in trouble lol , I wouldnt be caught in a river withought one though,, In your cruiser the intake is under the guard , so your bow wave dosnt exacly take water away from it , anything you can do to minimise problems crosing rivers , you should do . When we know were heading for deap rivers , we go to the extreme of silicon around the dizzi cap and over the lead ends , so far it has worked a treat Venus Bay

Hi Roscoe,
Agree with Eric. I've endured debates about snorkels on Petrols. Living in the country (Gascoyne) it's definitely helped with the dusty roads. Air filter cleaning/replacement is half as much as it use to be.
I also silicon up the dizzy cap and sensors for water crossings.

Only times I've had dramas - and even then came out of the water running on four of six cylinders was water in the dizzy cap.

Slightly better economy if you put one on a petrol as well.

Regards

Chris

Nice southerly coastal fishing trip someday.

I was interested to see all comments to post relate to water. What about dust? Living in a dry area I found a vast improvement when I removed the air intake from the front wheel arch. Another reason for a snorkle.
In closing Happy New Year to you all.

Hi,
I noted no one here mentioned breathers for the diffs and auto transmission. I understand it is important to have these added with the fitting of a snorkel for water crossings
