In a word, no.

They are two different engine designations with different power/torque outputs. Looked at them about 18 months ago when looking at 4X4's. New RA model MAY be different, but I don't think so.

I thought the 3.0TD was the same with different management setups, but now that Gary has responded, I'm not so sure.

I know the 3.5V6 is the same petrol engine as the Jackaroo's except it has drive-by-wire and grade logic auto transmissions as do the Isuzu Troopers (Jackaroos) overseas. It also has a different management system with lower power and torque than the Jackaroo.

The 3.0LTD in the RA is a different donk than that fitted in the 1998+ Jack's. The RA 3.0L is more akin to its 2.8L cousin, than the distant relative that the Jack has. RA 3.0L is designated 4JH1TC developing 96kW @3800 rpm and 280Nm @ 2000 rpm. It is of simple design, two valves/cylinder single cam, turbo intercooled, electronicaly controlled fuel pump with conventional injectors.
The Jack 3.0L (can't find engine designation but believe it is something like 4XJ1T) develops 118kW @ 3900 rpm and 333Nm @ 2000 rpm. The engine is a bit more sophisticated, double cams, double balance shafts, Caterpillar sourced HEUI (Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injectors) and turbo intercooled.

About the only common features are:
Both 3.0L Diesel Turbo Intercooled
4 cylinder
Made by Isuzu
Electronic throttle control (drive by wire)

I have been fortunate in being able to drive both engines, my own RA and Mum and Dad's 3.0L Jacks. Their first 3.0L was 1998 manual, and boy oh boy did that have some balls. Now they have another 3.0L 2001 SE for the auto box, because of arthritis problems they both got. You don't really get to appreciate the grunt the engine has driving through the slushbox, but in manual format, it is brilliant. On a gravel road, (with the manual) potter along in third gear, sink the boot into it and watch it spray gravel out the back when the turbo quickly pours the boost on.

Cheers,

Dion.
