As for the "very best"...its all down to what ya want.
As has been said, Hill End up the Bridle Track is about 3 1/2 hours west of Sydney..top spot including all the surrounds, however very busy this time of year, but if you head out mid week you should get yourself a good spot. Some camping area's have drop dunnies, but there are a few places we used to camp at with no dunnies, have to cross the river though..if you got a topo map, a place called Root Hog Hole was pretty good and another spot a bit further up (look for the VERY steep track that drops off to the left, heaps of top spots down there if you're brave).
Or the Myall Lakes was pretty good, used to go sailboarding up there a fair bit. Barrington Tops is up that way as well.

Gary theres a fantastic spot in the ------------- ------- area and it never gets crowded and is on the coast it has great 4wd tracks and heaps of fire wood cut to size and stacked next to nice clean bbqs. There are hot showers and no flies. The camping is free and the rangers help you put your tents up.

Iam going there next week for ten days.
Hope to see you there I will be the only other camper there so it wont be hard to find me.

You could spend days driving in ever decreasing circles, take a drive through the spectacular plate glass windows of Parliament House, get a birds eye view of both Houses, pick up a take away lunch from the taxpayer funded, heavily subsidised resturaunt, pick up a few pieces of art from the walls as you drive the corridoors, see how far you can ramp your fourby up the staircases, and finally have the entire security service escort you to your accomodation for the next 25 years. But hey, you dont have to worry about mortgage payments, bills, food as it will all be paid for by us, your loyal taxpayers.

My favorite would have to be dingo dell (near oberon)
its about 3 hours from sydney (depends on where you live) no yahoos only 4wd clubs come through theres a toilet and a running creek plenty of shade and heaps of little tracks to practice 4wding on.
Then you can always head to wombeyan cave to camp (only about 4 or 5 hours away) and they have hot showers and real nice camp grounds and the rangers there are real easy going.

Its my favorite choice by far.

Tried deua national park 30 k west of moyura miles of tracks not many people lots of camping area???Shallow crossing on clyde river privately owned land.

What about Tom Groggin or Geehi on the Murray from Thredbo.
or the Diggings ?? camp site near Thredbo.
or Paddys River Dam near Tumut.

All these spots have water and drop dunnies and are easy to reach.Subaru Forester

Mystery Bay, south of Sydney on the coast, but you will need a good map to find it is one of the best and most picturesque campsites I have ever stayed at. Well worth a visit.
