As for the "very best"...its all down to what ya want.
As has been said,
Hill End up the
Bridle Track is about 3 1/2 hours west of
Sydney..top spot including all the surrounds, however very busy this time of year, but if you head out mid week you should get yourself a good spot. Some
camping area's have drop dunnies, but there are a few
places we used to camp at with no dunnies, have to cross the river though..if you got a topo map, a place called Root Hog Hole was pretty good and another spot a bit further up (look for the VERY steep track that drops off to the left, heaps of top spots down there if you're brave).
Or the Myall Lakes was pretty good, used to go sailboarding up there a fair bit.
Barrington Tops is up that way as well.
