Syd, the road south from The Telfer Mine Road is pretty good these days and straight forward. You should be able to pick up a bit from these two blog entries. The road is maintained due to the new Uranium mine. The sandy stuff starts only a few km from the Desert Queen Baths turnoff.
The blog contains gps corordinates for the turnoff on the Telfer Road and also for the turn into Xmas Pool.
