Rail Trails - Beechworth, Myrtleford and Bright

Geobserver

Hi all,

We are cycling the rail trails around Myrtleford - Beechworth and Bright - later this week with three kids, youngest aged 10. We are not full-on cyclists - just doing it for something different. Any advice on what else to do and see on the ride itself or around the district otherwise?

Thanks

Call in at the Wangaratta Regional Tourist Info Centre. They'll give you the heads up on the Rail Trail attractions. The kids might also get fired up with all the Kelly Gang history as well. The car parking for the tourist info centre [in the main St[ is at the rear of the building. [Old Library]

The higest point is between Everton and Myrtleford, and not far past that is a Winery worth a visit.

Bright festival was on over Easter but still a lot to see a do there. Enjoy the ride as its a good one.

Another good Rail Trail not long been opened is through Bonnie Boon from Mansfield.

I agree with the above replies. There is some much for the whole family in the area. The views of the Mt Buffalo range when riding from Myrtleford to Bright are spectacular. Do your home work, visit local visitor centre web sites. I have ridden these trails, some of them a few times. I notice you say "we are not full on" cyclists, most of the trail is easy, but the Everton Station to Beechworth section can be testing, not too sure about the 10 YO. Goggle "Murray to Mountains Rail Trail" where you view maps & contour profiles. Diffey Rd runs from Everton to Beechworth, almost parallel & cross a few times. This section is a great ride in opposite direction after a short climb out of Beechworth. Note, Everton Station is several Km from Everton. A good detailed local map would be a help. Rooftop Mapping have a Beechworth-Albury-Wangaratta map that cover all but the Mytleford- Bright section. Some time on the bikes in Bright is a must.

Cheers
Allan

Anywhere along the Ovens River . . . the kids would probalby love to have a crack at gold panning.

Simple plastic gold pans used to be able to be hired in various stores in Bright, but are cheap to purchase from the outdoor places too, we have a small vial (came when first hiring pans), and each year we took the kids to Buffalo skiing, we spend a day in bright after, put some more colour in the vial, and do some other local things.
You will find flecks.

Wondilligong is also worth a drive to do the maze.

Myrtleford is a foodies delight, can't drive through that pplace without picking up a dozen or so jars of various mustards from that mustard place, now on the main road.
