Books such as Camps 6 list all public dump points in Australia that can be used for this.

The camps books are great, but also there are web sites that list the points, for example this link. Dump Points
I am glad you mentioned the problems with dumping into wayside toilets. Unfortunately a lot of travellers either do not care or do not know the problems and a lot of smelly toilets are such because of irresponsible travellers.

Hullo Kevin
My understanding is that napisan type products, when used in portable loos, are OK to dump in wayside toilets.

Most try to use dump points but a large number will drain into pit toilets or dig a hole out the back of a wayside stop. Unfortunately when the tank is full it seems it must be disposed of ASAP. You are right though Warren many folk dont understand the way a composting or septic system works & the problems emptying a chemical loo has on them. In short the majority of chemicals used to nuetralize the stink will also kill the bacteria in the toilets that break down the solids meaning they will smell & require pumping out more frequently.

Firstly, Napisan products will not adversely affect the function of a septic tank.

Secondly, digging a hole and burying it is fine. All you're doing is putting a canister in the chain events between backside and ground.

As GB said,"Napisan products will not adversely affect the function of a septic tank"
Those other chemicals that Thetford etc recommend I believe contain "Formaldehyde" which is ok for town sewerage systems? bur not for septic.
It is also usefull if you wish to embalm a log or two for prosperity.

Vote 1 for Napisan every time.

oi Barry,

when you say "a log" I presume you mean the wooden, tree-like version and not the type that you unburden yourself from?

Just clarifying.

I presume that Nappisan is Chlorine based, and that stuff is knocked out by waste matter from any source.

Personally if you get caught short, just dig a hole, and dump it in.
After all long drop "dunny's" work that way., and they are everywhere.

Don't stress just dump it.

Napisan does not produce chlorine. That would destroy a septic system.
It produces hydrogen peroxide which decomposes fairly quickly, which is why you need to redose periodically.

For more information google "sodium percarbonate"

Does the houseboat have a holding tank or a cassette under the bowl? If it is a removable cassette you may be able to motor to a town with a van park near the river that has a dump point you may be able to use that.
