Hi, we are about to embark on the "great Australia adventure" in a Prado towing a camper trailer. We have 3 young children. My big question is: do we make room for the bikes or will we end up never using them? We don't do much road cycling, and let's face it, we don't go very far and certainly not very fast. We ride most days but it is on a friendly bike track. Should we just leave the bikes at home and bring the kids scooters?

Scooters realy only work on hard surfaces like cement.
When your out camping the kids will find areas to race, naturally made jumps, etc. They will explore. Lets face it. That is one of the things travelling/camping is about. Exploration.

It also gives you a chance to sit back, have a coffe, read a book, etc with out the kids hounding you.
Just make sure you do pack some puncture repair kits/pump, just in case.

I never go anywhere without the kids bikes.

Our kids learnt to ride while on our trip and I wouldn't go without them. Your camped somewhere and the kids are restless, go for a ride. Sometimes it's a short walk to the beach or somewhere like that or, a quick ride. There were plenty of places for the kids to ride in caravan parks and also in the free camps.
I would take them.

Definitely take the bikes! Scooters are too limited where they can be ridden. Our last trip away, every time we pulled up, bikes and helmets first, kids off and away, parents set up without Mum, Mum, Mum, Mum.... all the time!
Only place we don't take bikes is if we're going to a remote beach for a long weekend - no tracks and too sandy to ride.
Take the bikes, you won't regret it.

Take the Bikes, even if it is only the kids bikes :)

We took bikes for our kids last year and I got the kids to ride from the Corner Store to the Corner Post at Camerons Corner :) Was a great way to get they to expend some energy after quite a number of hours in the car :)

Cheers Kev

When our kids were younger the bikes were a must. We have spent most long weekends in a 4x4 park somewhere. Its amazing what terrain they rode them on.

Thanks for your help, everyone! It's unanimaous, the kids bikes are coming (but I think we'll leave the grown ups ones at home. Not enough space etc). Happy traveling :)

Didn't take ours and didn't miss them... lots of other stuff to do. I think it depends on how long you stay in the one place. We take a footy which comes in handy for lunch stops too to get them moving after sitting in the car. But if you need to take something, a bike is going to be better than a scooter.
