fuel transfer on dual tanks

I have a long ranger second tank on my GQ nissan patrol.

After driving for a while one of my tanks 'implode' causing a massive bang under the car. A few hours after driving the bang appears again.

It's fairly obvious that the 'breathing' of one of the tanks during the fuel transfer (auto suction and not a 12v pump) is blocked in some way to keep the pressure ok whilst the fuel is moving between the tanks.

my question is two fold:
a) which tank is breathing (or in the case not) and,
b) which hose do I then need to check for blockage?

I've looked underneath and there are hoses all over the place so I don't want to start unplugging them all when I don't know what I'm doing.

You need to identify the breather hose. It's usually the highest hose plumbed to the tank, in the LR product it is usually to a dome ceiling section (the highest point/section) of the tank. This hose MUST not be blocked/kinked etc and should be plumbed to atmosphere via the filler neck or the charcoal cannister (depending on vehicle and fuel type)

Get a mechanic/mate to assist

don't know if your GQ tanks are the same as Tojos but have a look at thread 95158.

Now that I know what I'm looking for I'll get underneath it. It's tight on top of the tank so I might need to get it back to TJM who installed it years ago.

your tank might just breath through the fuel cap so check that first as it is easy to do.

Aha. This rings a bell now (it was installed years ago). I remember them telling me to ensure I don't swap the caps around. Fairly sure I haven't BUT the caps are covered in dust so I'll clean them up.
