Camping on or around Turon River NSW

Member - Boobook

I am heading up to Bathurst and would like to find a nice, quiet riverside camp. The Turon River was suggested to me.

I would prefer away from others, preferably no facilities and I have an off road camper. Oh and fishing if possible.

Can anyone point me to suitable places? I am not familiar with the area at all.

Enter from Mudgee rd just 1 km north of Cappertee turn left at (sign posted Turon Gates) this road and follow the signs to Turon Gates. You can stop at Turon Gates (fee) or continue past it along the river to Sofala. There are many free camping opportunities along this road. You will need 4wd after Turon Gates. Camping trailers will get through but noting bigger after Turon Gates.
Beautiful places all along the Turon & if you are into trout the take your fly fishing gear with you. Not for mug fishermen like me.

Google Turon River NP, if heading towards Mudgee turn left just past Capertee sign posted Turon Gates, and turn left about 100 metres down this road from the Mudgee road, follow this gravel road along the powerline for aprox 1 k and turn left through the fence at the Turon River NP sign, follow this for a couple of k's it leads down into the Turon River valley, excellent camping all along here to your left and right.

Stayed there a few times and it's a lovely spot. One of the crossings in was washed out in early May however there are two. The pebble crossings are deceptively soft so it's wise to air down.

There is a road called the bridal trail from Bathurst to Hillend and goes along the valley a few ks out from Bathurst camping all along
very busy on long weekends

Re the Bridal track, yes it is closed at Monaghans bluff but this is a long way up towards Hill End, there is still a lot of great camping beside the river for several kilometres before then. It will be very cold though at this time of year, expect minus temps in the morning.

As Colin has said there is good free camping on the Turon around Sofala. Another spot is the Ophir Historic Reserve just north east of Orange. There is a great bush camp with drop toilet right on the river there.When I was there, there was a caretaker but he is not there all the time. Plenty of history there also. Coordinates are 39-10- 09.56 S 149-14-19.49 E.
At Sofala on the Hill end road 33-04-31.85 S 149-39-00 E or on the Upper Turon road at 33-05-45.17 S 149-43-56.85 E are both good.
