Arrabury road and cordillo downs road

Does anyone know if these roads are still closed? We want to travel out that way next weekend and have seen on the site that they are closed after the rain a couple of weeks ago. If anyone knows the status of those roads please let me know.

We were there a week ago. The Cordillo Downs road is closed north of the Arrabury turnoff and closed at the Innamincka crossing. The north section past Cadelga ruins is likely to remain closed for quite a while.

The Arrabury road is open and in good condition from Innamincka through to the Birdsville- Windorah road. It was only closed for the first few days in June.

A pity they don't update their websites a bit more frequently!

Cheers, Gado

Would you please post your update on this road (and others you have first hand updates for) as a Travellers Comment?

Road Conditions on ExplorOz this link is for the SA page, so you might also check the Qld page. Tricky when some roads cross borders but the reports indicate this by section.

thanks,

Good theory ExplorOz, but the travellers comments are so old they aren't useful so it's generally pointless to look there. Some information changes daily, so most people just ask on the forum and get the immediate answer they need. Catch 22 I guess.

I agree, they do change on a daily basis in some areas. It is very helpful to get updated info from people who have just come back from those places. Some of the history of these roads is too far in the distance to be of any help. Ringing the council was a bit helpful, but I think they just do what they want when it comes to closing or opening the roads. Although being the peak season, I am sure they must realise people are going to be using them and it is vital for the outback towns to get the business at this time of the year.

Based on what Gado said the road is open and Julie I'm guessing the council person you spoke to simply looked at their own site which shows the road closed, dated the 4/6/12 !!
EO, I agree with the others the road reports on this site are usually out of date and maybe just links to the various state reports may be a better option ?
With the SA northern road report being the best.
Julie have you noticed the causeway at Innamincka is now open and cordillo downs accessible to Arrabury, that's the way we plan on going very shortly.

EO, I think travellers comments are still good for general impression of the value of the trip, scenery, points of interest etc.

Current road conditions like effects of rain, flooding, corrugations and when last graded are constantly changing so maybe need to stay in the forum, or in a separate sub forum with a use-by date on each posting.

Hence we are encouraging people to post their updates as travellers comments now - the system has been broken for a long time - thats why the last comments are old but its up and running again and much improved so put in so that others can benefit as clearly there is need for up to minute reports from the public - we cant do any more than give the official reports but people who travel can post the actually live conditions to our report - not avail anywhere else I know of?

Hi Julie,

We headed out up the Arrabury road yesterday morning from the Dig tree after it had showered overnight and after doing only a few kms of the very sticky red dirt we turned around and are going to Windorah via a big loop through Eromanga and Quilpie (where we are tonight).
We are towing a van and did not know whether it had rained more to the north but it was already filling the tyre treads and wheel arches. Also there is no way of getting up to date information when you are there so did not want to risk getting stuck!
The previous afternoon we spoke to a couple of people who had just travelled down it and they said it was in the best condition it had ever been...like a dirt highway.
The weather has cleared and had we waited another day, or even a few hours, it probably would have been fine to travel . You will need to check as close as possible to your trip.

The country looks amazing...

Regards,

Heather

Julie, if you want the most up to date road closure information go to the web site of the state road authorities or of the state auto clubs. The RACQ site shows roads where updates have been posted over the last two days (weekend) so it is up to date. It does not list the Arrabury Road as closed. The RACQ site shows a map of Australia. Just click on the appropriate state. The SA report shows a map with closed roads shown in red. It shows Cordillo Downs road as closed to the Qld Border.
Ask about condition of the road when you get closer. Someone may have driven down a badly corrugated road today but the graders might be on it tomorrow.

Thanks everyone, I have phoned the Bulloo shire council and they said it is closed now, but hopefully open by the end of the week as they are working on it. Hopefully that means it will be in a fair condition or even more hopefully GOOD condition or is that too much to hope for? Still will try to go out that way. Get more info later in the week. Need to be there on SUnday next.
