The car detects the electronic fob which prevents you from locking your keys in the car. The electronic fob holds an emergency key to use when the electronic fob battery goes flat. Just remove the emergency key from the fob in your spare set and place that on the vehicle this will not prevent the car from locking but will give you or anyone else who has it access to your vehicle.

SuperGrover,

That sounds like a great idea, but will you still need the fob close to start the vehicle?

Has the vehicle got a slot for the emergency key to start the vehicle?

The base model has kept the old fashion key to start the vehicle.

Yes it has a slot and yes you can. Toyota would also know this.

Yes you are correct. You do need to have the key fob to start my 2010 200 series. I know that when the battery is flat in the fob you must hold it against the start button to start the vehicle. So both suggestions with the FOB hidden on the inside either remove the battery or have one with a flat battery that you can hold against the start button.

Try wrapping the key in several layers of aluminium foil and place it in a small metal box. That may attenuate the wireless transmission to and from the key.

Cheers

Just remove the battery from the fob and store them separately.

Or I can elaborate on my plan - to remove the key from the fob and hide it somewhere on the outside of the vehicle - so you can get into the vehicle. Hide a spare fob inside vehicle with the battery removed. I've only had the vehicle for a few weeks, but that was my plan! Also the fob will work without a battery provided you hold it right next to the start button.

ThanksTony,
Thats reassuring.
I have a great fear of locking myself out of the 200series in the middle of nowhere :-)

Can't you simply use a plain key to open the door?

I had similar issues with a new prado.
If they are the same, you can remove the key from the fob, store the key underneath somewhere and put the fob in the car. You then must use the lock/unlock buttons on the other fob to lock and unlock your car. You won't be able to lock it by using the magic buttons on the doors as they won't let you lock a fob in the car.
