Hi All ,

Gramps and I did a day trip to the Coxs River with some great input from guys that had travelled down that track before . When we went in , Gramps ( Al ) and I made GPS marks on the important or less obvious junctions .

We took the Jenolan Caves road about 1 klm west of Hartley and about 10 klm from Mt Victoria . We ignored the turn off to Oberon and headed straight towards the Caves until we turned left onto the firetrail .

These are the waypoints :

33, 32.557 S and 150 , 10.020 E Turn Left off Hwy (Jenolan Caves / Oberon)
33 , 45.047 S and 150 , 02.496 E Turn left onto dirt track
33 , 45.262 S and 150 , 02.939 E Straight ahead - follow 6’ Track sign
33 , 45.341 S and 150 , 03.064 E Veer right
33 , 45.551 S and 150 , 03.092 E Right fork
33 , 45.611 S and 150 , 03.106 E Veer left ( Black Range Road )
33 , 46.404 S and 150 , 03.783 E Straight ahead
33 , 46.500 S and 150 , 04.045 E Straight ahead
33 , 46.647 S and 150 , 05.928 E Straight ahead ( Right is Moorara F.T. )
33 , 46.600 S and 150 , 07.192 E Veer Left
33 , 46.041 S and 150 , 07.389 E Turn Right ( Glen Chee Road )
33 , 45.018 S and 150 , 08.947 E Veer left
33 , 44.694 S and 150 , 09.395 E Veer right (around cattle yard?)
33 , 44.571 S and 150 , 10.711 E Coxs River campsite
Return to cattle yard and veer right down hill to creek
33 , 43.719 S and 150 , 09.923 E Left through gate
33 , 43.270 S and 150 , 09.744 E Straight through gate
33 , 43.166 S and 150 , 09.783 E Straight ahead then veer right
33 , 42.962 S and 150 , 09.735 E Straight thru gate
33 , 42.365 S and 150 , 09.610 E Veer right
33 , 37.818 S and 150 , 08.226 E Straight ahead
33 , 34.154 S and 150 , 12.375 E Exited the Cox’s River Road onto the Great Western Highway, about 5ks from Mt Victoria .

When we reached the Coxs River we found a camp ground with eco-toilets and a water tank . I gather these are there for the benefit of walkers doing the Six Foot Track . We also noted that there was a sign at the top of the big drop down to the river , which advised that the trail was only to be used by authorized tour vehicles and that there was a locked gate further down (about 3 to 4ks) in front of which it was impossible to turn around . We did not find the latter information to be true (on this occasion).

It is important to note that this trail with it’s many blind corners , is in constant use by walkers doing the Six Foot Track , and care needs to be taken to avoid accidents .

The Coxs River was not flowing when we were there and it was not a pleasant place in the heat of summer in drought conditions . I would suggest to any people doing this run that it is best in the winter months .

The track was fairly straight forward and required 4WD . There were a few steep sections with slippery sandy gravel where Al had to let his tyres down a bit to get up .

A highly recommended winter day trip from Sydney .

Hi Willie and Gramps,
Glad that you found your way OK.
Did you see the building at the Northern end of the reserve at the river? I have been there with a tour group and it was 46 degrees in the shade on the verandah but it would have been a few degrees hotter at the campground. Also down to minus 10 in winter.

That slippery gravel is granite and if you look closely it is made up of tiny quartz and granite marbles. You should try walking on the stuff!!!

The blind corners have claimed a lot of trailbikes (very popular on weekends, holidays and long weekends) as they really scream through there. I've had a few head ons with the unregistered buggars myself. Not to mention calling the ambo's and police for seroius injuries of bikers and walkers with heart attacks and broken bones.
So if not travelling mid week PLEASE take it easy.

I have no idea who would be stupid enough to place that sign there but I bet it is forceibly removed by the end of the Christmas holidays.

Anyhow Merry Christmas to all and stay safe.
Regards
Tour Boy

Tour Boy,

"tiny quartz and granite marbles"

Not quite what I called it at the time as I started sliding rear end first towards a steepish dropoff LOL

I did'nt notice the sign and had continued down the track a ways when Willie called me on the radio to inform me of the good news :)))

Noticed that a few travellers, long before us, were apparently hell bent on straightening the track a bit by blazing their own trails up some steepish inclines.

Agree with you about taking it easy while travelling that route. It would'nt be hard to be involved in some nasty incidents if you tried to hurry through.

Thanks for the info.

Hi Tour Boy ,

It was so depressing down there in the heat and flies that we got out straight after Gramps had eaten the sandwiches his mum had made for him . Like I said , this is a nice place to go in the Spring to Autumn period , but not in the summer .

Have you ever been stopped and questioned by NP rangers while you were down there ?

Do you have any more day trips like this we might try ?

Thanks again for your help ,

Willie .

Hi Willie,
The NPWS boys have NO durasdiction there. The rhs (south side) of the Black Range is Kanangra Boyd wilderness area (go in there and you will have your vehicle confiscated) and the lhs is state forest. Neither parties lay claim to the road CALM maintain that about once every 2nd blue moon.

I have a ripper of a spot near Capertee with a challenging way in or a woosy way in. My campground is located at a spot where you can sit around the campfire and watch the platypus frollicking. But there is no water there at the moment so I will take you in there after it rains again someday. At the moment is looks horrible similar to the cox not a good time for a visit.

Tour Boy ,
Thanks for the Capertee offer - it sounds nice . Do you work for a tour operator or do you run your own tours ( you will not offend me if this question cannot be answered here on the forum ) ?
Happy new year with full rivers ,
Willie .

Hi Willie,
I ran 4wd tours for myself and subbying for 9 years. I don't at the moment (I would rather pay my bills) But I have kept all my licences and acreditation current just in case.

Unregistered trail bike riders on the Glow Worn Tunnel track from Clarence are a huge problem as well. Use extreme caution at all times when travelling through this area! The ba***d's will come around blind corners at you, two or three abreast at warp speed 1.
