Travelling to Cape York

Greg Skilleter

We are interested in travelling to Cape York, towing our Cavalier Off-Road camper trailer. By the time we would like to do this trek, our son would be ~4.5 years old and we were wondering how practical the trip would be with a young child. We would appreciate any information/tips from people who have tried the trek with young children of similar age. We would probably try to do this as a tag-along.
Thanks, Greg & Kate

We went up the cape with 4 children aged from 4 to 12 about 12 years ago. There was no problem at all, in fact we picked up a mother with a baby(!) along the way, and gave them a lift.
The track at that time was too rough for our camper trailer, (not a 4WD) which we left at Port Douglas, and the kids slept in a tent, whilst we slept in the back of the cruiser.
We used a book by Ron and Viv Moon for the trip, which is probably around still and updated, highly recommend it if still available

Peter and Ramp. Thanks for the information. Our main concern was whether our son would get too bored with the long periods of driving. We looked into some of the tag-along trips and they were covering serious distances per day, leaving little time for periods out of the car for running around. We were thinking about taking 3weeks (Cairns to Cairns) for the trip and taking it relatively slowly - is this a reasonably amount of time, or would this still require long drives each day. Regards, Greg

Depends on your boy's personality...they're all different, aren't they.
I would think that would be a very comfortable trip, plenty of time off for the beautiful spots along the way.
