suspension problem

Hardy

Hi all

I have jsut had a 40mm ARB (old man emu) suspension lift fitted to my diesel Prado. Now the vehical sways every time I change gear and moves across the road. Not seriously but very noticable. The effect is similar to when I had diff locks fitted to another vehical and is a result of the springs being wound up when the engine is accelerating. Has anyone experienced similar problem. I would expect an ARB product to perform better. Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers
Hardy

My first line of enquirey was with ARB. They told me to ask the people who installed it as they are the ARB stockist. I have called them up to ask them to look at it. AT the moment I am not chucking a big sad over it if it is what I can expect. However if it is somehting out of the ordinary then I might a little less amicable. Cheers Hardy

G'day Mal B
I am considering a s2000 TJM lift spring & shock kit for my 80 series. Will be looking at only 50mm of lift to avoid too much height gain. Do you reckon I need to factor in the caster kit? Existing suspension's shot.

It certainly sounds like the front end geometry has changed because they have fitted the lift kit and not re-set the entire front end. Don't take it to a normal tyre and wheel alignment place because most of them only adjust toe-in, go to a reputable truck and Light commercial wheel alignment specialist who know how to adjust all 3 axis of the front end using shim packs etc. While they are at it, get them to dial in a little extra castor angle, it makes the steering a little heavier when parking etc, but it makes the vehicle track a lot better at speed. Be prepared to pay around $100 - $150, a $30 generic wheel alignment only gets you $30 worth of quality.
Good luck Brad

I used to work with a front end specialist and just had a good laugh at your post. You are perfectly correct most of them do only adjust toe and if they do (he used to) the full monty they do it as a quote job for around what you said. The reason being that you measure the front end and then if it needs adjusting we used to put it on the floor and experience tells you what size shim to fit. If you were wrong when you remeasure it it is back on the floor again. Most normal guys are too lazy because these vehicles can be very time consuming, however my advice is to wait with your vehicle while they do it. you can tell by watching their face if they have got the shim stack right. I have seen even the guy I worked for when pushed for time he once in a blue moon said oh well close enough. When you find a good guy stick to him.
