Eucla to Esperance

In Jan 2004 I am intending to paddle a sea kayak from Eucla to Esperance and am in the process of researching the area. I would appreciate any information on the area and if possible any GPS readings and access for a support crew to the coast. I am particularly interested in Toolina Cove and the possibility of landing there. What is the surf like? Is there a big beach break? How wide is the beach if there is a beach there. Similarly what are the beach surf conditions like along any of that area of coast.

After a long paddle and perhaps an overnighter will we be able to land immediately after the cliffs on the western end.

Thanks

hi Tel
a great website that may help your cause, www.nullabornet.com.au
very informative and covers towns and beaches from Streaky Bay to Esperance.
i remember something in the news a while back about a couple of guys that rode jet skis from perth to sydney. they may have a website with good info.
best of luck in Jan.

Tel,
Toolinna cove has only about 50m of beach. Guaranteed, this is the only beach between Twighlight Cove and the western end of the cliffs. Access from the top is a bit precarious, but can be done (not for the faint-hearted). There is also a flying fox for getting equipment up/down.
All along that coast, there are reefs, which affect the surf, along with the weather, so it's very hard to say what you could expect on the day. Marine maps might give you a better idea of what waters are protected; the topo maps aren't all that good.
Twighlight Cove is probably best accessed directly south of Cocklebiddy, rather than driving on the beach from Eyre.
On the western end of the cliffs, there is probably about an 8km drive back from the dunes to the cliffs. Be careful with soft sand - we nearly lost a vehicle there a few years back.
Not sure, but I understand that a 4wd club cleared the telegraph track from Baxter memorial east to Twighlight Cove, but can't be sure on this one. Otherwise, it's the highway via Caiguna to get from Twighlight cove to Baxter memorial. Perhaps someone has an update on this.
Drop me an email on gerron@bigpond.net.au for more info.
Sounds fun!
