Hi, I have a 2006 NS Diesel Pajero auto. I'm looking at fitting a snorkel for the various reasons and benefits we have all read and heard about. After receiving a few quotes from a few aftermarket stores, a guy at my local ARB advised against fitting a snorkel to my vehicle due to a "significant resonance that goes through the vehicle." He said it was OK for a manual but not an auto, the noise would make travel uncomfortable. I've seen numerous Pajeros and Tritons with snorkels, is this fellow incorrect or have I only seen manuals on the streets? I'm still keen to progress, but this guy has put me off a little.

Welcome to the club Grunter.

Going through the same process myself at the moment.

Safari Snorkels do not recommend installing a snorkel onto DID Auto NS or NT Pajeros due to excessive induction noise.

Airtek however supply and install a snorkel to DID Auto NS Pajeros.

You will find quite a lot of good information on the Pajero Club of Victoria Website Forum.

The jury is still out for me as I am keeping an eye out for an Owner with one installed to have a chat to.

Cheers Dazza

Thanks for the link to the Vic Paj Club Dazza. I'll be doing the same I think, finding a Paj with a snorkel and bending the owner's ear!

G'day Grunter,

I too will be interested in any favourable responses having recently purchased a NS paj auto diesel.

One thing I will say though.......the purpose of fitting a snorkel is to help with water getting into the air intake yeah?

On the paj diesel the air inlet at the moment appears to be just above the grill isn't it ? It would be a deep crossing for water to get up that high to become a problem and if it was that deep I don't think I would be venturing into it anyway. Its got to be well over a metre off the ground.

I was told though that it is inadvisable to fit a snorkel to the NS for the reason that this engine is a tad noisy but I'm sure with more diesel models coming onto the roads someone will develop something that works.

Its a topic I will follow both here and in the paj club with interest.

Cheers.

Gday Paul

I did read that tests show a snorkel apparently assists in improving fuel economy through drawing cleaner, cooler air because of the height the snorkel draws air from (away from the road surface) so my aim is two fold - fuel economy and, as you mention, water crossings. I'm no Malcolm Douglas, but the additional height would assist on crossings of Eli Creek on Fraser Island where the depth can vary from a trickle to a raging river very quickly.

Given that Mitsubishi choose not to offer snorkels for these vehicles probably should tell me something!

Thanks for your feedback.

There are many more benefits to a snorkel other than water crossings.

Yes the air intake on the NS is nice and high, however it wouldn't take much to all of a sudden find yourself with water at that height and an air intake full of water.

Prevention is always better than the cure.

Seems like those with the Airtek are happy.

True Dazza, again, I'm no Malcolm Douglas, even the thought of entering a fast flowing creek and water rapidly heading up over the bonnet fills me with trepidation! The snorkel offers piece of mind I guess if and when we enter those types of situations. As a sales rep in sunny Brisbane town, I'm forever trudging my way around City streets in our crappy traffic, so the potential to save on fuel as well as treat the engine better is a key driver to the snorkel option.

I don't know where the "normal" air intake for the Pajero is so this may not be applicable.

The air intake in ours was in the wheel well. Yep. Just where all the dust gathers. So we put a snorkel on mainly to get "cleaner" air and to help if we ever need to ford anything deep.

NS Pajero is located right behind the bonnet latch.

My older pajero has the air intake just above the grill, feeding to the mudguard, then to the air cleaner.

Only done the ocassional deep water (over the top of the wheels), but my snorkel is more useful for dust control.
Used to clean the air cleaner every couple of days on dirt roads, now it hardly ever needs doing.

Hi there Grunter, my neighbour had one fitted about 3 weeks ago to his 06 DID Exceed, great fitment job, no noise issues (no louder or quiter) and is rapted with it, he seems to think that it goes a tad better ?? He did have an issue with it blowing smoke just after snorkel was fitted but turned out it had nothing what so ever with the snorkel but another matter. Cost him for memory just over $700 supply and fit, was done by ARB and his is 5 speed AUTO. Not sure why an auto over a manual would be that different anyway as far as noise goes would think the auto would be quiter especially when backing off ?? All up hes extremly happy with the vehicle and the snorkel'. Not sure where your located but I asked my neighbour and he said your welcome to come and check it out if you want..Regards Steve M

Hi Steve

Thanks for your thoughts, much appreciated. ARB were the ones that told me not to fit a snorkel, so I'm glad your neighbour has had a good experience! I've been quoted around $700 from TJM for an Airtek so money sounds right.

Thanks again,

Grunter
