toyota prado v6 overheating

Hi have just completed trip to dalhousie springs and prado had terrible overheating problems in high range travelling at 40 kmh.problem also arose on palm valley trip an car actually boiled and then meneenie loop road in 2wd car just had new water pump fitted and was towing small camper trailer in 35-40 degrees is this common i feel it needs a thermo fan but not sure. not losing any coolant ?
any ideas or referalls

It sounds like a 1 off.. Theres heaps of playdo's towing without Thermofans.

The radiator is clear of bugs, adn lights etc? You dont have massive spotties blocking the radiator? Radiator isnt full of bugs and seeds??

Im presuming this has all been done before the water pump was replaced?

Whatr year Playdoe, and what flavor?

the fan is only a viscous coupled belt driven fan and it works on starting for 10 odd seconds

Thats what I thought Pete. Sometimes they don't engage when they should. They contain fluid which may need to be replaced, or maybe the whole unit. You could test it on a warm day by running the engine up to normal temp, switch on air cond and let it idle. As temp rises the fan should start to spin.Bob

If you have just had a new waterpump fitted there could be a problem with the thermostat.

the early ones had reports of overheating . . . These temps wouldn't help.

the vehicle is a 1998 v6 auto with 70,000 klm it only runs a viscous coupled fan and i do have two 8" ipf driving lights which are bull bar mounted.

Unusual for any Prado to overheat. My guess in likely order would be
#1 The viscous fan is not engaging. BTW, these fans are much more efficioent than any thermo fan. You don't hear the fan on startup. You should hear it engage (roar sound) when the the temp gauge has risen above its normal level. Its hard to test.
#2 Radiator is blocked. Usually caused by coolants precipitating because of incompatibility between different brands of coolant. Only solution is to get it rodded by a radiator shop.
#3 Maybe the thermostat

It won't be the lights. Prados have heaps of radiator area.

I've had that model and never had problems. If all is working correctly it will cope with anything including towing a caravan with aircon on full in 40C. Why was the water pump replaced??? Nothing can go wrong with them other than leaking! Check thermostat or even replace it if you can't check it as it sounds like it's not opening correctly. Lights would make very little difference as the fan will still suck the air through. Don't even think about fitting a thermo fan as aftermarket thermos give grief .... just get the system working properly. Also check that the fan belt isn't loose or slipping.

I have a 97 RV6 with two IPF 800 lights directly in front of radiator, and the Toyota mesh screen thingy as well. Never had a problem. Should be fairly easy to isolate the cause with the guidance above. Good luck.Russell S
