 2008 Outback WA & NT - Day 2 Monday July 27th

Submitted: Wednesday, Sep 24, 2008 at 09:04
Awoke at 6:20 am after one of the best night’s sleeps I have had while camping. Fired up the new stove once again for the first morning coffee. Went for a well deserved shower in what is one of the best amenities blocks around. Back to the campsite, I skipped breakfast and we packed up the trailer. A different pack to the one we set off with, but still not totally happy with it, and I am sure that it will change again many times over the next six weeks or so.

We left the caravan park at around 9:00 am, fuelled up at $2.10 litre and elected to grab some pies and sausage rolls for some further sustenance. We then visited the Sandstone historical store where we purchased some books on the flora of the areas we were going to be travelling through, as well as the obligatory car sticker for me, postcard for Shai and hatpin for Jackson.

We have been to Sandstone a number of times before and have seen the sights around here, but as this trip is also going to be a video diary we revisited places like The Old Brewery and London Bridge to capture these on video.

We finally headed out of Sandstone just before 11:00 am, making our way up the unsealed back road to Wiluna. After an uneventful drive, (only being unsure of the route once, as the road we were on was somewhat different to the planned route on Oziexplorer), with a number of stops to shoot some footage and photos, we arrived at Wiluna at around 3:15 pm. Fuelled up again at $2.16 litre picked up some more milk and bread and then headed for our second nights camp at Gunbarrel Laager.

What a great spot to camp for the night. At $40.00 a night it’s not exactly cheap, but it had hot showers, a great camp kitchen, TV room (which the kids were banned from) and a mandarin orchard, where we were able to go and pick our own fresh mandarins straight from the trees at $3.50 kilo. The hosts here were also great and we spent quite a bit of time chatting to Gillian about the property and the general area. If you are out this way, this is definitely a place worth staying at and they are also an Exploreoz advertiser.

Tonight for dinner we just had tinned soup, quick and easy. I also updated the trip spreadsheet and downloading the video shot so far onto the external hard disk. Time for coffee and a red, before a good nights sleep, before a 6:00 am rise for an 8:00 am departure tomorrow morning.
