Simpson Desert trip July 08
Submitted: Monday, Jun 23, 2008 at 09:18
Hi, Just thought I would go through my plans for
the Simpson Desert
trip. Like all of these sort of trips it has been a good few years in the planning. And I have to agree with my father here, half the fun is in the planning.
We will be leaving on the morning of the 5th July and stopping the first night at Byrock then Tibbooburra via Wanaaring (if conditions allow) and meeting my dad and step mum at
Cameron Corner
. Hope to get there early to sort out the vehicles re: provisions etc.
We only have 2 weeks available (but will not be pressured into rushing, if we are late ,bad luck) so getting to
Cameron Corner
to meet Dad and Di as quick as possible but without pushing it too hard is important.
From then on we will play it by ear as to where we camp, Dad and Di have done this trip a few times and know the spots.
We will be travelling the time honoured route via Merty Merty, Lyndhurst, Maree, William Crk,
Oodnadatta
, Mt Dare,
Dalhousie Springs
(cossies packed) then Rig Rd, K1 line to Poeppel Cnr then across
Big Red
to
Birdsville
.
Hoping to meet a mate some where on the track that is in an organised group that will be riding bikes from
Queensland
to WA. (Rather him then me)
The way home from
Birdsville
will be dependant, as will the whole trip, on the roads.
Last time we were at
Birdsville
it rained and we didnt come home the way we wanted.
So hopefully this time we will get to go via Cadelga,
Cordillo Downs
, Innaminka and across to Tharomindah where Dad and Di have their caravan stored at a friends house.
Homeward bound via
Cunnamulla
, Bourke, Dubbo etc.
At this stage it looks like we will be buying a Black Wolf Turbo 240 tent to camp in. The back will have a storage unit with the Bushman
fridge
.
One of the problems we have with the jackaroo is a small fuel tank, so we will have to carry 2 jerry cans on the roof on a Rhino rack, we wont fill these untill Mt Dare.
Also on the roof will be a spare tyre and rim, a 4.5 kilo gas bottle and a gear sack to keep or bedding etc. in.
I am looking forward to the trip and I would like to thank all contributors to the
Forum
either by replying to my questions or through questions that they themselves might have asked or answered for other people.
Counting the days now,
See you on the track,
William

Reading this on the 2nd July, guess you have already left, half your luck. I have another month to wait, taking 5 rookies for the trip of their life. All my stories of the Simmo and all she had to offer were actually heard by a few who approached me to tackle the trip for a fourth time in four years. One word intoxicating ! Once you have completed the trip, you start planning the next, each time smarter and wiser (more toys) generator replaced with solar, tents replaced by swags, prepared meals replaced by the camp oven, experience is a wonderful thing. I encourage each 4WD owner to tag along like yourself, prepare, plan and enjoy. Stop the vehicle approaching and say "hi" we are all out there for the same reason. This is a great country my friend your appreciation of her has only just begun. Please send in some photos and share the experience. Regards Member Mick (Forbes).
Reply: Hi Mick, mate I think you need to adjust your computer clock, a day out by the looks of things. LOL.
All of this is certainly a learning experience.
Have been planning this trip since 05 when we travelled to Birdsville with a camper trailer.
Its a bit different this time with only taking what we can fit in the Jackaroo.
A friend of mine asked the other day "whats at the Simpson" and I replied the other side.
He couldnt figure it out and I think that sums up the difference between people who want to travel and see the places that not a lot of us get to see and those that just want t go to one place and stay there for 2 weeks, each too their own.
Photos will be posted.
Cheers,
William

Hi William,
I will be there ( Simpson ) Around the same time. I will be taking the Coober Pedy - Oodnadatta - Dalhousie path. French line and then on through to Birdsville. Coming back to Adelaide via Innaminka and Broken Hill.
This time through I am travelling with the Father in Law and the two Brother in Laws and their two young sons. That is 6 butts and 2 4wd! The Pajero is being loaded with 95% of the equipment. Last time through I was 3 ton but this time I recon I am going to be a few kilo's over that!
The father in law will be in his Disco ( green ) and I will be in the Pajero. Might see you on the track.
Jason
Reply: Hi Jason, I cannot remember if I have replied to you, if not apologies.
Sounds like you will be having a bit of a boys road trip.
Weight of the vehicle is certainly a issue, will weight (pun intended, LOL) and see when I start to load up over the next couple of days.
Have a good trip and a safe one and I will look out for you on the track.
William
