10 to 16 July 2009 Days 22to 28 – After a quick pack up, fuel ($1.55c per litre) and fresh bread and milk we headed out of Exmouth bound for Ningaloo Station. We arrived at the homestead around 11 30 am, paid the very modest camping fees of $40 for the week and with instructions of were to camp headed 16 km along a very sandy and corrugated track to North Lefroy Bay where we camped just above the sand dunes and with a great view of the bay and the reef which was about 1500 metres off shore.

The next 6 days were had a mix of idealic conditions to very strong winds that nearly blew us away. The tinnie finally hit the water on day 3 with conditions quite windy and a solid swell inside the reef, we trolled a mixture of deep diving lures and poppers fro a couple of hours without any success. Those with bigger boats were catching fish outside the reef but the weather conditions didn’t let us take the tinnie outside.

So we fished from the beaches each day also with no luck – the fishing gods had deserted us but we still enjoyed the long beach walks and spotted lots of turtles close in to shore. We had lots of chats to other campers, some who stay for months at a time on an annual basis.

On one of the really windy days we headed off to Coral Bay to check it out, it was about a 200 km round trip and we were away most of the day. Coral Bay, in school holidays, is very busy with all forms of accommodation booked out well in advance. We had hamburgers and milkshakes for lunch and Linda had a cappuccino.

We wandered down to the beach and waded to a drop off, we were quickly surrounded by a school; of very friendly spangled emperor that are fed daily by the locals. It was like walking the dogs they followed us for about 50 metres, swimming around our legs. The fish are protected as Coral Bay is in a Marine Park Sanctuary where no fishing is allowed.

Thursday saw us pack up and today we are heading to Karratha to visit a friend of a friend, he is organising new tyres for the Prado, another set of BFG All Terrains, I’ve been very happy with the current set. They are over 4 years old and have travelled to Cape York in 2006 and across Australia on some rugged tracks without a single puncture.
