Cental
Australia
Adventure June 2012 , Days 4, 5 621/06/12
Day 4.......... Travelled from
Longreach
to
Winton
today, a pretty easy drive and like previous days very little traffic
on the road
.
Our choice of accommodation was the Matilda Country CP, an interesting place indeed, the sites were reasonable size, not much grass, and the scenery was not great, but it was somewhere handy too spent a couple of nights so we could see the local sights.
Day 5........... First on the agenda was a trip out to Age Of Dinosaurs 25kl along the road back towards
Longreach
, what a fantastic place, really great location on jump up, with great views of the surrounding area.
The tour around the facility was very interesting, both our
young
boys were entertained as we're we. We had a very nice coffee at their cafe overlooking the bush around the jump up.
From there we were off the the Matilda centre in town, another interesting place if you are interested in Australian history.
And then there was the musical fence , wow, what a let down. I don't know if it is just me and I am not at all musical, or if it is just a crap place.
Day 6........... Departed
Winton
this morning for
Boulia
, our last town before hitting the Plenty Hwy.
The road to
Boulia
is really quite good although it is very narrow and when those road trains come from the other other way it can be a little rough on on the side of the road getting out of the way.
The scenery for the first half of the trip is beautiful, with colorful rocky outcrops against the bluest sky I have seen, the last 100kl is pretty dull in comparison.
There are two stops you have to make along the way, the
Middleton
hotel, and
Cawnpore lookout
. The
Middleton
hotel is basically a pub without a town, it has icy cold beer and a very nice bar keep, and it's the only pub I've even to where you have to walk through someone's lounge room to get to the bar.
Cawnpore lookout
is a nice
spot
along the road to see the surrounding countryside, just be careful, the track to the top, although short is steep and rough, you can park at the bottom and walk up.
Now at the
Boulia
CP, what a great
spot
to spend a night or two, there is actually grass to camp on, and there's water in the creek.
Tomorrow we will see the sights and then we hit the dirt for a couple of days.
Cheers
