Gavern & Sue

Back To Index
We've decided to take the 90 km detour to the Mornington wilderness camp which at this
time of year is fairly easy to negotiate. We fight over who has to radio ahead to the camp
ground at the turn off as they only allow 50 people at a time and if you haven't radioed
ahead they are likely to turn you away once you arrive. The place is fairly quiet except for
a group of 25 interns who have come from Broome and Derby to do some training exercises. Not
sure if it's medical or drinking training that is the priority as a very large amount of
bottles appeared at the recycling station and they were asking the bar to purchase more at 9
am on the day of departure. We set up and then drive to one of the swimming places. Gavern
checks the water and insists that what I can see in the water is only a branch of a tree.
Severe flooding occurred in 2002 and a significant number of the trees were uprooted. After
awhile I look over and ask Gavern why the branch is no longer there and we realize that he
maybe should have looked a little closer. The thought of a crocodile, even a freshwater one,
has me almost walking on the water in an attempt to get out. As we sit on the bank drying
off we are treated to rainbow bee eaters swooping over the river. The night is spent
listening to the sound of dingoes teaching their young to howl. It's almost as loud as
Gavern's snoring just not as continuous.
No Desk, No Boss, No Stress. :)
