After looking around at the various drawer systems available and not being able to find anything that met my requirements, I decided to build my own. It has dual fridge slides, a single drawer, a 60L water tank, Whale water pump, invertor, ARB air compressor along with 3 power outlets.

The draw and fridge slide run on 160kg full length draw runners and the slides have the Engel quiklok base. The system is bolted in place using the 3rd row seats bolts. Originally I only had the one fridge slide but when my better half insisted we need a 2nd Engels as a freezer, who was I to complain. The result worked out really well as the draw system now has a flat base when the fridges are not in use.



























I got the drawer slides from Häfele, a mob at 33 Juna Drive, Malaga (t) 9249 3833. This is their online catalogue with the draw slides I purchased under the "draw runners" section. There are a lot of different styles, I got the 750mm ball runners, full extension, rated at 160kg.

The T-handle latch is from a place only 200m from Hafele, called UES, in Malga. They supply all the truck body building parts, catches, etc... The UES website is here. Just look under handles (but must admit I couldn't find my one on-line, but it was on display there).

Hi Willem,

The high fridge is used as the freezer so we only go into it once or twice a day so we just live with having to peer into it - or kneel on the tailgate.

If I was to start from scratch I would use one of those fancy drop down fridge slides, but I don't have enough room (width wise) for it to flip upside down when not in use. Only miss out by ~30mm but might as well be 300mm.

Hi David,

The water tank is at the back of the system under the false floor . You can see in the pics how the fridge recess doesn't go all the way to the cargo barrier, the drawer is the same length as the recess and this leaves 300mm of room to fit the tank in. Its 1200 x 300 x 300mm and is made of 6mm HDPE.

The power and air outlets are really handy, I have now added a 240V outlet above the hand gel on the RHS so I don't have to lift the side wing to access the inverter. What you cannot see in the pic is that the water hose comes out about 500mm and retracts when not in use.

is the blue item behind the switch panel your air compressor if so does this section also slide out as i'm concerned about your compressor running hot if it stays in there fully enclosed or is that blue item a water pump???? just curious not criticizing it's a very very neat job and the detail that has gone into it all

Hi Mazcan,

The blue plastic pipe was the original airline but it got too hot and melted! I have since replaced it with a 1/2" stainless steel pipe and it works fine. The pump itself doesn't get too hot, its the airline that gets hot. The stainless steel pipe can handle the heat and helps dissipate it too.

The water pump is that small white cylindrical item just in front of the compressor. I have since replaced the white pipe after the pump with braided stainless steel that extends about 500mm from the panel and can retract when not in use.

Excellent stuff Captain. Thats what i call a good set up and finished really nicely too. Just one thing i noticed was the position of the fire extinguisher. If left there it would be too hard to get to when needed. Otherwise well done.

Thanks, its taken a while to get the finishing touches done, but can say its a very practical setup for me.

I've tried to find a better place for the extinguisher but keep coming back to there. I cannot mount it under the seat and don't want it on the other side of the cargo barrier - don't think the plastic bracket would survive a big front ender and it would end up being a missile. So, while it is far from ideal its the best compromise - would love to hear some better suggestions.

Hi Captain,

Makes mine look rather pathetic so over christmas I must have another goat it. A quick question on power. This will be sucking about 16 amp for 2 fridges. Is this correct? Have you changed the 2 origional cruiser standard batteries? Are you running a solar panel for power as well? Thanks for the ideas, Carl

Hi Carl,

With both fridges running, they only draw about 4 amps peak each so only 8 amps total in peak load, but the average load is lower so only around 5-6Ahr average. I used 60mm2 (9mm copper dia) cable to the rear to minimise voltage loss, but it can also handle a huge amount of amps - well over 200amps but I have fused it at 40 amps.

I have split my twin batteries with a redarc isolator but currently still running the original cruiser batteries. This works fine but do plan to upgrade the batteries when they die. I also have a 100Ahr battery in my camper trailer that I can load share with the cruiser aux battery. So far I haven't needed to use solar as I can keep my batteries powered thru running the cruiser if required.

I liked these ideas (which I will certainly incorporate in my next effort):
a. the flip over base (level the floor when no frigs' loaded);
b. the pullout table under the main frig; and
c. the way you recessed the electrical panel.

Where you have the hand cleaner bottle, on my previous effort (Patrol), that is where I had to leave an opening to get the jack out and became an ideal spot for my fire extinguisher.

P.S. Don't you just love getting the glue and sawdust off the carpet? Next time I swore that I would cover all my carpet in 'glad wrap' until it was installed and finished.

Thanks for the compliments. A handy tip I used for the glue and sawdust is to use spray-on contact adhesive, much less mess than the normal stuff. Also, using an air compressor to blow the sawdust off the carpet works a treat.
