Better breathing for the 6.5 Chev V8 donk

My Nissan patrol has a 6.5 naturally aspirated (some may say "asphyxiated".... hahaha) diesel motor. It's intake air was channelled via a Safari snorkel, then through some 3.5" wire-reinforced tubing, to a 8" diameter Donaldson air cleaner, then more 3.5" tubing into the intake chamber.

I decided that the asthmatic intake would benefit from having a 4" custom made (ie" home made) snorkel fitted, along with a larger Donaldson ram head.

I had to modify the inner guard so that the 4" tubing and associated rubber bends, could pass through via a much shorter route. I removed the Safari snorkel and set-about the task of MUCH enlargement of the oval shaped hole in the outer guard. A 5" angle grinder was used to cut-out a rough square shape (approximately 5" x 5") adjacent to the Donaldson air filter canister, which sits above the inner guard. This is where most Patrol owners mount their 2nd battery, but I have batteries 2 & 3 down the back in the cargo box.

I will see if my technical skills stretch far enough to me attaching a couple of photos of the job. The final photos won't be taken until tomorrow, cos it was nearly dark when I finished the fit-up today.

I took it for a test drive, but all the roads around here are really flat and I didn't have the camper trailer on, so it was difficult to tell whether she is breathing any better under load, but I could hear more induction "music" which I partially attribute to the freer flowing air intake.

Hope this might be of some interest to somebody....

Roachie, on the Humvee the intake is all 4" before and after the Donaldson so it should breath better.
Another cheapie mod is to fit the stainless headers fitted to Humvees standard, would involve a new exhaust in your situation though.

So will it make to St George?? hahaha

The pics didn't work due to them being in photobucket. For the insert image in blogs you can upload them directly from your computer without having to use photobucket.. Try editting it to see if it works ;)

Looking more and more like a D9 mate. Actually looks a really good job and should help the old girl breath. Any chance on coming down and fitting mine?

It looks great and I'm glad to see that you don't have any reservations in drilling a hole or six. The bracket looks like it can at least survive some corrugations..

Kind regards
