 Eucla to Kalgoorlie

Submitted: Tuesday, Apr 01, 2008 at 22:57
Well we finally made Eucla, last evening, and quickly set up the camper before dark. there was a strong wind blowing all afternoon from the SE, so the camp at Gero's rest area was great as we had a bit of protection from the wind with all the trees there.
Plenty of room there, but couldn't workout why us and one other van were the only travellers there? By morning we had it worked out!! they have a big diesel generator which ran all night, but we managed some sleep as we both were very tired.

After an early packup, most of it in the dark, we set off to try and make Kalgoorlie, by dark. Along the way the sights of the Nullarbor were interesting......especially at the roadside rest areas, where there were no toilets! It seems some people still havn't learnt how to bury a simple poo!! Enough said on that one! W must have seen 20 to 30 wedge tails eagles, and after leaving Cocklebiddy roadhouse, we heard some chatter on CH 40 about someone on horseback crossing the Nullarbor.

We finally found them watering the horses on the roadside, and stopped for some footage and pics and a chat. The lovely mother of two, Kerry Stanley is riding from Bindoon in WA to Beaudesert in Qld with her 2 daughters Shannon & Kate and support crew, while raising money for breast cancer along the way. they have had a HF radio donated, 6 tons of feed, a weaco fridge and some other items as well. If you see them in your travels give them a toot or stop for a chat, lovely lady, and I tried to prompt her to write a book about her journey too.
Anyway we are in Kalgoorlie for a few days and will be researching gold areas while we are here.
