G'day Lance,
I'm probably not the best choice for camp spots on your parent's side. I mainly stay on my side, the east. It was only my second trip to Craigs and Sheepyard/Fry's
camping ground.
I was astounded by the number of DSE gates we travelled through. These are all to be shut on the 12th of June and not open again until just before the
Melbourne Cup weekend.
I can recommend Fry's - it was much better than Sheepyard IMO - but this also had a
gate prior to the camp site. Our first night at Howitt was just on top next to the hut. This area is also about to be closed for winter.
My advice is to pick a number of
places to camp from a good map - the Rooftop series are pretty good - and then check the track closures at the Parks site - or give the local Parks office a call once you know where you want to go.
If you're over this way I can assist as I know a few tracks that don't get shut off and can get you into the snow and HC. You can tow an off-road trailer into these
places but two vehicles would be much better than one in case things don't go to plan.
Hope this doesn't dampen your ideas too much. Maybe your parents will have a few ideas about tracks that remain open all year round.
Regards,
Tim - Stratford, Vic.
