Description
Australia's alpine region region really covers both sides of the NSW and Victorian borders. Known in NSW as the Snowy Mountains and in
Victoria as the Vic Alps much of the area is protected by National Park.
Australia's highest mountain peak is Mt Kosciuszko in the NSW Snowy Mountains near the township of
Jindabyne. During winter this mountain and the surrounding peaks are covered with skiers, snowboarders and toboggans. The major ski fields around Mt Kosciuszko are Thredbo, Perisher Blue and Mt Selwyn. This entire region lies within the Kosciuszko National Park, which wraps around the ACT in the north and meets the Alpine National Park on the Victorian border to the south.
Victoria's alpine areas lie within the Snowy River and Alpine National Parks. The major ski fields are Mt Buller, Mt Hotham, Mt Buffalo and Falls Creek.
Winter however, is not the only time to experience
Australia's alpine region. During summer activities include trout
fishing, horseriding, four-wheel driving,
camping, bushwalking, hiking and mountain bike riding to name just a few!
4WDing is especially excellent in the alpine region when snow is not about, from late spring through to early autumn, with the Vic Alps High Country being full of extremely challenging driving.
