 Description

This junction is well signed and provides the only access to the Mitchell Plateau region (allow at least 3 hours one way driving). Sites of interest on the Mitchell Plateau are Mitchell Falls, Surveyors Pool and Port Warrender. There is no acesss or vehicle tracks to Lawley River National Park or the Kimberley Coastal Camp. There is plenty of room to get off the track at this junction with flat areas and shady trees providing a great spot to take a break.

Most visitors only go to the Mitchell Falls. This track is 85km long and is rough and unmaintained. At the end of the track, it's then a 3km walk to the top of the falls (6km return). Numerous smaller falls and rock pools can be explored and swimming here is safe. A bush camp with toilets is provided by WA Department of Environment & Conservation at the end of the track, and a helicopter scenic flight is available for a few weeks during the peak tourist season.

The road to Surveyor's Pool is marked north of Mitchell Falls and is another 1 - 2 hrs drive further on. This rarely used track leads to a carpark where an unmarked walk trail of 4km leads to the pool at the bottom of the Mitchell Falls (beware estuarine crocodiles).

The only coastal point accessible on the Mitchell Plateau is Port Warrender, which is further along from the track to Surveyor's Pool. Bush camping is possible here, but campers are cautioned due to the risk of estuarine crocodiles, and extreme remoteness. Mosquitoes are reportedly also a nuisance.
