Description of The Walls Of China
The highlight of the 70km sign-posted vehicular track around the
Mungo National Park is the white coloured lunette (or "walls") - named the Walls of China where you can walk back in time through the layers of a dune and stroll to the top of the drifting sands for a view across the lake floor.
Lake Mungo today is an ancient dry lake bed however during the
ice ages
Lake Mungo was one of a chain of freshwater lakes strung along Willandra Creek, then the main channel of the Lachlan River. These dry lakes preserve one of the longest continual records of Aboriginal life in
Australia, dating from around 50,000 years ago through to the present day. Dating of ancient burials shows that these are the oldest known fully modern humans outside of Africa.
When the lakes dried 18,000 years ago, strong winds had swept storms of sand up from the lake floor, dumping it on the shoreline and creating the famous lunette - known as ‘The Walls of China’. The lunette is constantly eroding, and has already revealed many secrets, including Mungo Lady and Mungo Man, fossils of mega-fauna, ancient and extremely well preserved campfires,
cooking hearths and burials revealing that Aborginal people continued to live near soaks along the old river channel and quarried stone from rock outcrops on the lake floor. The fragile formations of sand and clay of the Walls of China have been shaped by the elements - a visit at sunset or sunrise is recommended. Note that guided
tours are available from private tour operators year round, and ranger guided
tours are held during school holidays.
Remember that all Aboriginal artefacts, bones and fossilised plant matter is protected by law. Do not pick up or remove any that you may see.
