 Description of Weipa

This town was built by Comalco and the Queensland Government in the 1960s. From the very beginning in the early 1800s, Weipa was noted as a potential mining site, although it wasn't until 1955 that the area's almost pure bauxite was confirmed. Today the town is home to the world's largest bauxite mine and tours are available.
