Port Arthur is known by most as the historic site of a convict settlement, with
ruins that can be visited by the public. It was also the sight of Australia's worst massacre that occurred in 1966. The area is vastly changed since then, with residential areas surrounding the old penal colony, but not within the tourist area so their proximity is not obvious to visitors to the historic site. The site itself is continually being improved and is
well maintained and easy to walk around.
