The township was built after WWII to service the continuing construction of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme.
Since then it has developed into a base for tourism: 4WDriving, bushwalking, fishing, mountain biking and skiing.
It has a GP clinic, hospital, ski and bike hire, supermarket, chemist, newsagent and service station.Free camping
is available at Mountain Ck on the Trappers Gap Rd from Tawonga to the north though access for vans and CTs is limited.
There is a sealed road running up to Falls Ck the ski resort and over the plains and down to the Omeo Highway, but beyond Falls Ck it is closed during the winter (approx June to Oct. inc.). Not suitable for caravans. In winter chains must be carried to Falls Ck.
