Warburton Ranges Mirlirrtjarra Community is located 750 kms north east of Kalgoorlie on the
Great Central Road (Outback Highway) in the
Gibson Desert. The first missionary contact made with Ngaanyatjarra people was by Wade & Jackson at
Old Well near
Warburton in 1932-33. At the site ‘
Old Well’ on the western bank of
Elder Creek, approximately 5 km from the present townsite,
Warburton Mission was established in 1934. The townsite was later moved due to flooding after heavy rains. The
Warburton Mission was also used as a ‘Ration Depot’ and, in the early 1930s many Ngaanyatjarra men adopted the practice of
dingo scalping in exchange for rations at the Mission, meanwhile carrying on a traditional lifestyle in the hinterland.
