The Old
Cloncurry Road was originally called the Smith Highway. It was the track used before the present day
Barkly Highway was built. Before the advent of reliable motor vehicles it was a Cobb & Co route. This also was the road used by by the Redex and
Ampol Trial cars of the early 1950s.
In the days of Cobb & Co the town of Mt Isa was not yet established, the track went a winding route through the Argylla Ranges from
Cloncurry to
Camooweal, The Military also used it with Convoys of vehicles during WWII. They would have rumbled right by the grave of little 14 month old Elsie Campbell.
