Description of Glow Worm Tunnel
One of two now abandoned tunnels on the railway line, the Glow Worm Tunnel curves through almost 180 degrees and is subsequently very dark. Some days, you may find a small creek flowing through it. The conditions in Glow Worm Tunnel are perfectly ideal for certain "glow worms" which inhabit the walls and roof of the tunnel. Glow worms occur in other dark, damp
places in the Blue Mountains, the marvellous thing about the Glow Worm Tunnel is probably the best place for the visitors to see them. These little creatures are however very sensitive to habitat disturbance such as noise, lights, touching and smoke fumes. It is highly recommended to wear good walking shoes and take a torch for the tunnel.
The glow worm tunnel is accessible from Lithgow on the State Mine Forest Road, this is a badly potholed road through pine plantations and eucalypt forests and one must give way to logging trucks en-route. The road into the tunnels is about 30-40 klms. There is a
camping area at Bungleboori about 15 kklms in amongst the beautiful pine forest but you need your own firewood and water, there are toilets. The road enters
the Gardens of Stone Nat. Park and the Wollemi Nat. Park, the road leads to the gloworm tunnel walking track which leads down the original railway track to the tunnels where oil shale from the Wolgan Valley was transported back to Lithgow. Make sure to take a torch to gain access into the tunnels, its dark in there...
