The Australian Government took control of the Pine Creek Railway from 1 January 1911. It operated until 1 July 1918, when the line became part of the Commonwealth Railways. The former North Australia Railway linked Darwin with Birdum - a distance of 511 km - by 1929. It was never profitable and has been closed for many years.
The Adelaide River suburb, obviously, got its name from the river on which banks it was built. Its history dates back to the time of the construction of the overland telegraph line, when the construction laborers inhabited the place as a camp site. It was in 1873, upon the inauguration of an eatery, that the site became sort of hailed as a residential area. This was further established when a police station was constructed six years after.
