Description of World War II 119th AGC Nurses Quarters
In late 1939 the Military began acquiring land at
Adelaide River for use as a rest camp and Army Farm. Following the Japanese Attacks on
Darwin on the 19th of February 1942,
Adelaide River became a huge rear headquarters’ and logistics base for the forces, Medical facilities were an essential part of the plans for military operations at
Adelaide River. The hospital was established at
Adelaide River in March 1942 when 119 AGH moved from Berrimah. Twenty Two nursing staff and 50 patients arrived at
Adelaide River, but the site was covered with thick bush, hygiene was poor and it was located between fuel stocks and an Ammunition dump. The hospital was quickly moved to a new site and developed into a fully equipped hospital with 22 Sidney Williams huts, 66 tented wards and a wide range of facilities. The pre-war cattle handling spur line was upgraded and a second line and siding established for use by medical evacuee trains. A receiving area including kitchen facilities was established nearby and during April 1942 the hospital staff shared their facilities with the airmen of the USAAF 8th squadron. The 15 Australian Ambulance Train made its first run from
Darwin on 17th June 1942. It comprised converted cattle wagons and a kitchen van staffed initially by 119th AGH personnel. In mid 1943 9 Australian Ambulance Train took over. The hospital operated at
Adelaide River throughout the war years, and was occupied by various units including 119th and 107th Australian General Hospitals and a number of associated medical units. The hospital siding saw over 160 trips carrying 11,752 patients by the ambulance trains to January 1945. It reverted to it’s pre-war use soon after but was abandoned in the mid 1970’s.
