 Description

Outback Queensland is an expansive landscape extending north from the NSW/Qld border all the way to the Gulf Country on the Gulf of Carpentaria. This vast part of the continent offers amazing diversity highlighted by the many colourful characters of the Australian bush. It's the people of Outback Queensland, living in complete harmony in a timeless landscape that will fascinate you. This is where you'll find that real Australian stockmen on outback cattle stations still exist as do shearers, legends, pioneers and poets.

Every outback town has a story to tell, from tiny settlements consisting of the lone bush pub to the largest inland city of Mt Isa. Every journey is an adventure. You can follow in the footsteps of early pioneers, drovers and legends in just about any part of this region. Travelling the Matilda Highway connecting Cunnamulla in the south with Karumba in the Gulf Country in the north you can learn the history and hardships of the Great Stockade, the rise of the Australian Labour party, the legend of Waltzing Matilda and visit places mentioned in famous ballads by Banjo Patterson. You will travel in the footsteps of early explorers Burke and Wills and our aboriginal ancestors.

Even the dinosaurs have left their mark on Queensland's outback. Fossilised footprints preserved in mud can be viewed near Winton and at Riversleigh near Mt Isa lies one of the world's most important fossil finds.

The Queensland Outback promises every visitor a memorable historic journey through a rich panorama of Australia's great cultural and pioneering heritage. So, bring your Akubra, swag and fishing gear and enjoy Australia's real outback.
