Brindabella National Park

Close to Canberra, this trek covers an area riddled with steep zigzagging climbs and descents accessible only by 4WD. In fine weather, it's a fairly easy drive, but in winter it becomes more challenging with rain and snow.

This trek is located in the Aust. Capital Ttry region.

 Description

Blue Range Hut, View from Mt Coree, Goodradigbee River

Brindabella National Park is the most northern park along the Australian Alps. Only 30kms west of Canberra, the park has a great system of 4WD trails along the fire trails which offer fantastic views.

The camp area at Cotter Reserve has toilets, picnic tables and fireplacess. The camping areas at Blue Range Hut and Flea Creek have no facilities.

General

There are no permits required for Brindabella NP, but camping is restricted to the camping grounds.

Driving conditions in this area are weather dependent. If travelling in this area in winter, be prepared for snow and cold winds.

4WD is essential and as some parts of the tracks are rocky and steep, 'off-road' tyres are recommended, as are sump guards for vehicles with less ground clearance.

 Environment

Brindabella National Park has a wide range of flora and fauna. Covering most of the park are red stringybark and scribbly gums, whilst you will also see brown barrel and ribbon gums on sheltered slopes as well as snow and mountain gums in the higher altitudes.

Whilst visiting Brindabella National Park, you may see wallabies, kangaroos, wombats, possums, gliders, echidnas, lizards and snakes.

Cockatoos, falcons, owls and robins are some of the 80 different species that make Brindabella NP their home. The park is also home to several threatened species.

 History

This area was traditionally occupied by the Walgalu Aboriginal people. The name "Brindabella" is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning 'two kangaroo rats".

In the 1850's, gold prospecting was tried throughout the range, but was not a major sucess.
13 years later, in 1864, the Franklin family took up the valley for grazing.

In World War II, the area around Blue Range Hut was used as an intern camp for Italian Nationals. Evidence of the camp still remain today including the equipment store, the creek diversion channel and swimming pool. The Galley of the camp is what is now called Blue Range Hut.
