 Description

The track takes you east from Warraweena Homestead through some undulating country and then you pass in to Maynard's Well Station. This is a working sheep station and care must be taken to stay on the marked track. The track follows the route of the Old Coach Road and in and along creek beds where magnificent River Red Gums flourish. Later the track passes through Angepena Station also a working station and then again through Maynard's Well before returning to Warraweena. With a difficulty rating of 5 this track is only accessible by high clearance dual range 4x4 vehicles and a fair amount of low range driving is involved. Bookings are essential.

 Things to See & Do

History, scenery, Warraweena Private Conservation Park, Maynard’s Well Station and Angepena Station.

 Environment

The valleys of Warraweena are mainly covered by native pines, wattles, eucalypts, Spinifex clubs, Yucca Grass Trees and other tall shrubs with saltbush and grasslands on the flat around Sliding Rock. The property lies within the Adelaide Geosyncline, a belt of ancient folded sedimentary rock stretching far inland from Kangaroo Island

Yellow footed rock wallabies inhabit the ranges while grey kangaroos, euros and emus abound. There are many skinks and lizards to be seen including the red-barred dragon which features on the logo of Warraweena.

 History

In the 1890's, when a small gold rush took place and miners and prospectors streamed to the Angepena Goldfields, the government was forced to build an access road from Beltana via Sliding Rock to the goldfields. Sliding Rock copper mine operated from 1870 until 1877 when it closed down but there were many people who stayed on in the small settlement, finding work on the goldfields or in the town of Sliding Rock. It is believed that Chinese labour was used to build the Coach Road from Sliding Rock to the Angepena Goldfields.

Today the Old Coach Road passes from Warraweena through Maynard's Well and Angepena Stations. The latter stations are both working sheep properties and visitors are reminded not to interfere with stock or watering points. Please leave gates as you find them.
