Corner Country

North of Broken Hill the bitumen gives way to dirt. Here you'll find Mootwingee NP, the opal-mining town of White Cliffs, one-pub towns like Milparinka, Tibooburra and finally Cameron Corner where the 3 states of NSW, SA & Qld meet.

This trek is located in the Outback NSW region.

This is an interesting route through remote but colourful outback NSW and is popular with 4WD travellers heading up to the Strzelecki Track and beyond to Innamincka.

Most people begin their Corner Country tour from Broken Hill - the region's largest centre for supplies and facilities however the most direct and more adventurous route from eastern NSW would be to start from Bourke and head west along the Bourke - Tibooburra Road via Wannaaring. This route is very susceptible to flooding and can be closed and impassable after heavy rain.

Leaving Broken Hill however, head north on the Silver City Highway. The bitumen soon peters out and then there's a good deter for camping at the Mutawintji National Park. This park has walking trails that lead to many caves and overhangs containing aboriginal rock paintings, stencils and engravings.

Instead of backtracking 60km to the main Silver City Highway you can continue heading in a north-easterly direction out the back of the National Park for 97km before coming to a junction with the main White Cliffs - Tibooburra Road. Turn right and 42km you will be in the Opal Mining township of White Cliffs.

Leaving White Cliffs return to the main road to Tibooburra. The road continues to be good dirt until you meet back up with the Silver City Highway 134km from White Cliffs. Turn right. You'll start to see the country change. Sand ridges appear, fresh water lakes, salt lakes and if full, lots of bird life.

The Wanaaring Road junction is 67km north of the White Cliffs road junction and 5km on the left is the turn-off to Milparinka, where the pub is the only life around.

Tibooburra is 42km north of Milparinka and holds lots of bush character. North of Tibooburra is the large Sturt National Park. The popular run out to the corner post of the three states (SA, NSW, QLD) can be done as a loop departing and rejoining at Tibooburra. Alternatively, you can continue west past Cameron Corner and join up with the Strzelecki Track and head up into Innamincka and the Cooper Creek.

To get to Cameron Corner head north out of Tibooburra and take the turnoff to Mt King Station and "The Jump" loop road, 19km out. It is 12km to the ruins of Mt King HS and a further 25km to Olive Downs HS (now a ranger base for the Sturt NP). 2km south of the ranger is a camping area. Turn left near the shearers quarters and head out towards the homestead. Turn right as you pass the gate and then head north.

Follow this track for 33km where it finally meets a main track at Binerah Well. At the t-junction turn right and travel 15km. Look for a track on the left a little south of the airstrip. It should be marked "MW 162". Turn left (not hard left).

Heading west this track traverses sand ridge country and finally meets the main Camerons Corner - Tibooburra road. Turn right. 8km on you turn left and continue west for 18km to the Dog Fence. After closing the gate behind you turn right and you'll see the Corner Post and general store.

Cameron Corner is located at (GPS 29° 00' 00" S, 141° 00' 00" E)

Cameron Corner

If you wish to complete the loop road back to Tibooburra, retrace your steps back towards Fort Grey (GPS 29° 05' 33" S, 141° 12' 02" E), 29km away. This main road will take you back to Tibooburra across the normally dry Frome Swamp then through the gibbers and back to the Silver City Highway 2km south of Tibooburra (140km from the corner).
