MUD MAP

This trek takes you through sections of the Shannon and D'Entrecasteaux National Parks and provides spectacular scenery ranging from towering Karri forests, endless white beaches, mobile sand dunes, limestone cliffs, coastal wildflower heaths and wetlands.

The most challenging sections of the trek fall within the D'Entrecasteaux National Park that is managed for its wilderness values, so few facilities are provided. The areas traversed have isolated beach campsites, wild coastal vistas and excellent fishing.

The trek commences out side the Northcliffe Tourist Information Centre located on the cross roads in the centre of the small South West town. While passing through stop and have a walk through the Forest Park located just east of the Tourist Centre. The park contains a variety of planted trees, old growth Karri, Marri and Jarrah Forest and some interesting attractions such as the "Hollow Butt Karri" and the "Twin Karri Trees".

The trek initially leads you to Muirillup Rock, an outcropping island of metamorphic rock surrounded by a sea of Karri. The Boorara Tree and Lane Poole Falls follow this stop. The Boorara Tree is an abandoned fire lookout built in 1953 and in use up till 1977. The top section of the tree has broken off and unlike the Gloucester Tree can no longer be climbed. A 2.5 kilometre walk trail commencing at the Boorara Picnic Site takes you to Lane Poole Falls on the Canterbury River. The spectacular sluice like waterfall cascades over a 6m wide, 12m high granite rock during winter and early spring and is well worth the walk (1.5hrs return).

The later stages of the trek take you to Tucket's Hut, a squatter’s shack nestled in the dunes high on West Cliff Point, then past Fish Creek and onto the endless Coodamurrup Beach. The final point of call is Moore's Hut - a relic from the days when pastoral leases covered the area and graziers stayed on the coast with their stock.

The majority of the trek is easy going. The most difficult sections, ascending several steep dunes along the route are made easy with reduced tyre pressures so make sure you have a good air compressor or manual tyre pump, tyre gauge, and a shovel. Coodamurrup Beach becomes quite narrow and treacherous during winter and is best avoided during this period.

An alternative inland route to Moore's Hut is given in the following trek notes if conditions aren't the best. The total distance of the trek is approximately 133 kilometres and you'll need at least a whole day to take in all the sites. An overnight stay at one of the huts or bush campsites is highly recommended.

Northcliffe is about 370 kilometres from Perth and 210 kilometres from Albany.

There are several campsites along the trek route ranging from clearings in the bush to established campsites with toilets, barbecues and a supply of wood. Tucket's Hut at West Cliff Point can be used if the caretakers are not in attendance. A campsite has been established at Moore's Hut with barbecues, picnic tables, and toilets. All other campsites have no facilities.

If you plan on camping away from established sites please bring your own firewood as the collection of wood within National Parks is prohibited. Please use existing cleared areas and take your rubbish home with you. National Park passes are now required for entry into some of Western Australia's parks. These are available from rangers at offices of the Conservation and Land Management (CALM) and other selected outlets.

CALM have removed the ladder down the cliff face at West Cliff Point due to the potential chance of rock falls. Do not climb down the cliff face as it is unstable. All coastal cliffs can be extremely fragile. Many are quite soft and often collapse without warning. Be careful of waves, especially when fishing and exploring rock platforms. Watch for the incoming tide. Use the beach not the dunes for picnicking and playing - dunes are fragile.

Several readily available maps cover all or part the Trek area. These are the R.A.C.'s Lower South West District Road Map, Streetsmart's Southern Forests and The South Coast Touring Maps (also available on CD). Forestry maps are available from C.A.L.M. at a scale of 1: 50 000. The Northcliffe and Broke Inlet sheets cover the trek route. The best of this selection of maps are the two Streetsmart maps which show most of the tracks mentioned in the pace notes in addition to providing information on accommodation and points of interest.

Prior to commencing the trek pay a visit to the Pemberton or Northcliffe Tourist Centres for information on all the attractions in the area.

Trek Notes - Northcliffe to Fish Creek and return Trek commences at the Northcliffe Tourist Information Centre, Northcliffe
