I will be in the Birdsville area this year. I am hoping to visit Haddon Corner but l will be towing a caravan. I have read that there are two dunes to climb when approaching from the east.
Would it be possible to tow a van there - if not where is the nearest, safest place to leave a van from there?

Dunes to Haddon Corner?
We travelled up Cordillo Downs Rd from Innamincka to Birdsville and, being the edge of Sturts Stony Desert, our biggest hazard was the loose gravel on the unsignposted bends, not sand dunes.
My Camps 6 shows a photo of hard dirt at Haddon Corner...do you mean Poeppel Corner by any chance? Now that one would involve more than one sand dune!!
If you do, the caravan park at Birdsville would be perfectly safe, I'm sure.

...and that's assuming that you have a robust enough van to take the corrugations and gravel on the roads to Birdsville, that is!

We were there in 2009 so my memory isn't going to be the best but I think you are right there are a couple of dunes. If you are just popping in there for 1/2 hour to sign the book, then I would just unhitch it, make it secure, and then go in it's not that far, as I say all from a memory so haopefully someone may clarify exactly for you

cheers

Yep , two small dunes at end of track ..... would be a struggle with a large van - smaller ok

garytee, we were there a few weeks ago with a trailer & it was all ok. There are two dunes close to the corner but I doubt they will impede you even with a caravan. Best to check them out for yourself when you arrive there. It is only a short distance to the corner from the first dune.

Okay, so there really are dunes at Haddon Corner, eh?
I suppose with all the other dunes around, the rule is to assume that there'll be more, eh?!
I've just learned!

Hey garytee there are 2 dunes as said not far from the corner, I would leave the van at the first one as the location is remote, any traveller heading that way would be a like minded person and you gear will be safe.

Dont stress too much and have some fun.

Phil.
