Several months ago I decided to replace my Fresh Shield vacuum sealer. I was never really happy with it. The bags leaked a few times after a long time away, even if I double sealed. Also it sucked the air from the bottom and juices frequently went into the vacuum pipe of the unit.

After looking around I looked around and decided that I wanted one with good suction. Ie greater than -0.8bar, and suction from the top. I wanted a fairly compact one that I could take away and didn't want to pay $250 plus either.

I took a chance and bought a Vacpro Home sealer ALI-VAC1

I had never heard of it and it isn't promoted at caravan shows.

The website doesn't have many specs, but the distributor emailed them to me. -0.8bar.

What I like compared to the Fresh Sheild I had.
-It clearly has a higher vacuum pressure and gets rid of the air better.
-It has a double seal. 2 seals about 5 mm apart from each other.
-It has a great drip tray to catch any juices
-It has an inbuilt cutter that cuts straight lines
-It has a removable roll holder

The seals hold well. I do double seals ( 4 in total)
I got it at Hardly Normal for about $190 but it is available all over the place. It also came with a whole lot of storage containers which I don't use.

Another tip if you are freezing. I cut out 4 - 5 x 3 mm ply boards a little bigger than the bags that I cut. When I put the bags of food in the freezer I stack them on top of each other with the ply sandwiched between each bag. They come out perfectly flat and I can stack then vertically in the freezer very tightly. It's like a filing cabinet of food.

Highly reccomended compa

$190, that is what Fresh Shield wanted to clean mine before they would do the warranty repairs. It never sealed from day one and consumer affairs say it is reasonable for them to charge a cleaning fee where food is involved. It could well have had gunk in it as it did plenty of sucking but no sealing before I sent it back. They kept telling me it was operator error. Would suck until it stopped then nothing else. None of their agents could get it to work either so I reckon it was not me.

better go before I say something bad about Fresh Shield.

What a great idea to use the boards to flatten the packs.
I think I'll find a way to adapt the idea for packing fish on trips away. If you have to move anything once frozen into the Fridgemate/Engel etc., you can never re-pack as compactly as originally.
Ripper idea, and simple.
Thanks Boobook.

Some good info folks, but I never bother freezing Vacu-sealed meat. It doesn't require to be frozen and will keep for weeks just by being kept cool in the fridge.

We have a Sunbeam Food Saver and use rolls rather than bags. Just cut to length to suit the contents.

By not being frozen, the packs of vacu-sealed product remain "pliable" and fit better in the Engel, even when removed and replaced.

I never used to freeze things either, but I had a few bad experiences with chicken and I now include fish, seafood inc prawns in the menu.

I don't really think chicken lasts more than 1 1/2 weeks in my experience. Maybe it was the previous sealer.
