Melbourne to Port Augusta

For a few yeas I have been going from
Melbourne to
Port Augusta via
Mildura to avoid the roadworks on the western highway that slows traffic to 40 or 60 much of the way. It was very frustrating.
Last time I came back, much of the work had completed and it seemed a lot quicker than in the past.
Have the roadworks largely finished? Is it quicker to go via the Western Highway now?

Still a bit of work there Tony. I gather you then head up the Sunraysia Hwy. Don't know if it's just me but I always reckon the Calder is quicker especially if you cut off at
Ravenswood and across to Marong to bypass
Bendigo.
I've always found that I can save another half hour at least by heading down the
Mullewa Road just short of
Red Cliffs and turning back north at Meringur joining the Sturt west of Cullulleraine. I bypass
Mildura entirely that way.
A trip best undertaken with a 4:00 a.m. departure from
Melbourne I reckon. :-)
