Hi everyone,

Hoping you can help me. I am looking for a great camping spot, preferably next to some kind of water (beach, river, lake etc) that is quiet and actually feels like real camping. We are coming from Sydney so the closer the better but happy to drive a few hours, we have an SUV so can't be real 4WD access unfortunately.

I am used to camping in WA where there aren't so many national parks and set camping grounds.

Really just want to set up a tent for a few days and only bump into a couple of people (if any). Also looking to be able to light a camp fire.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Morgan

There is heaps of camping along the Mudgee Road From Lithgow .

Turon National park just out of Capertee might be the go , heaps of Riverside camping and not over crowded .
Also Goulburn river national park , another top spot overlooking a river .

That's just two of many that a SUV will have no trouble with.

But there are plenty more good campsites .

Newnes is nice and ticks a lot of the boxes except it can be busy during any sort of holiday period. Close to Sydney and SUV access means everyone can get there so you get crowds. Another really nice spot where the river is spectacular is Upper Colo Reserve at Upper Colo. There are some good spots on the Turon River too. You can get a Subaru into the Diggings campground in the Turon River NP if you know what you are doing but it's not for a novice.

Two more I thought of. Near Bowtell's Swingbridge over the Cox's River on the Six Foot Track is a nice place you can camp. You have to open and close a few gates to get down there coming in off Cox's River Rd. You can also camp on the Abercrombie River between Oberon and Goulburn just off the main road with easy access. I've also seen lot's of Subaru's go through the actual Abercrombie River NP but you need a bit of confidence and experience to go in there in an SUV. Some nice spots in there too.

By the way there is no difference between a SUV and a 4wd - all one and the same.
Definition of a SUV here.

A sport utility vehicle or suburban utility vehicle (SUV) is a vehicle classified as a light truck, but operated as a family vehicle. They are similar to a large station wagon or estate car, usually equipped with four-wheel drive for on- or off-road ability.

Some on here will not accept that their Cruiser or their Patrol is an SUV but it is.

In Australia anyway, a 4wd is generally regarded as a vehicle with low range and a SUV is generally regarded as a vehicle with AWD. Note the word "generally".

Burralow Swamp...close to Sydney and usually fairly quiet.
Belanglo state forest...usually quiet as well.
Several spots around Sofala..

There are some great campsites out along the Lachlan River anywhere from Cowra down to Lake Cargelligo.

Just west of Forbes there are camp sites all along the river. Wouldn't be lighting camp fires out here for a month or two though.

Farmers might shoot you and hang your skin on the fence!

Looking to go in the next month. No kids. Would prefer to be able to camp next to the car. No requirement for toilets. If there is water to wash dishes etc that would be a bonus.

As you have a SUV it would be hard to find a spot that you have to yourself at this time of year unless you go mid-week (having a fire will depend on the weather)
I would probably go to Newnes easy drive from Sydney plenty to see & do BUT you will have to share it with others but there's normally plenty of room & most 4wd campers will be camped on the other side of the creek away from the Car camp site
you will get plenty of places to go, from this forum
good luck
