Hi everyone. Wanting to upgrade to a larger tow vehicle from my current Jeep Cherokee Limited, towing a Jayco Expander Outback 16' at around 2.3 t. Looking at either the Ford Everest Trend or Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Any feedback on these vehicles would be much appreciated.

Can't comment on either of those 2 vehicles but what about the MUX, very reliable vehicle and good for towing 3,000kg.

Out of those 2, I'd choose the Ford, only because no one can convince me the yanks can make a reliable car yet ..

Money aside, for anything over 2T, a 200 series or a V8 Patrol would be my choice, but plenty will say the smaller SUV's do the job OK, but only because they haven't towed with a bigger and more powerful 4wd, or they can't afford one. And I don't blame them because the prices these days are ***I*.

Yup, could by 2 MUX or D-Max for one whitegoods 200 series. Who really needs V8 power?

Gronk,

Some people won't go near the 200 series because of excessive fuel consumption, soft suspension, limited payload and high purchase price for yesterday's technology.

Sorry! I had to bite. Your bait was too good. At least I didn't mention the Patrol.

I don't mind a bite. Yep, I own a 200 series ( 2009 model, couldn't afford a new one ) and 17 l/hk doesn't seem excessive, especially compared to what a "small" engine will get while towing. Soft susp.....I don't know anyone with a 4wd who hasn't upgraded their susp ? Limited payload...yep, will affect some, but doesn't apply to me.Yesterdays technology ?? mmm, can't work that one out ?

Have you towed with one ? Nah, didn't think so !!

There's nothing wrong with the Jeep GC's towing ability, power or fuel consumption (diesel)....while it's going. :-) A VW Touareg would kick all their butts in every department for similar money.

Except offroad mate !! In "proper" 4wding situations..

$113,000 for the V8 is a bit dearer than the GXL cruiser at $80,000. But for a tow vehicle, yep, nice bit of gear !!

If ONLY considering those two vehicles, the Everest would be my choice. By it's own admission the Jeep is Limited, not only in reliability but also service and dealer network too.
Preference. MUX, far more reliable than a Fraud and Jeep.
MUX is 3 ton towing but that is the max of course. All who have them like them for towing up to 2.5ton. Probably the MUX will also be the most economical of them all.

Depending on ball weight you may have to upgrade the rear springs and also better shock absorbers which will be more able to control the mass of the caravan and it's effects on the rear end.
The shock upgrade applies to almost all vehicles in that class.

Jeep topped the recall list again last year. And that's only for safety-related faults.

Heheh.

From US Consumer Reports website:

The very essence of rugged, go-anywhere vehicles, Jeeps have a long history of customer loyalty despite lagging in reliability, fuel economy, comfort, and interior fit and finish. ...... The Grand Cherokee has many good qualities, though of late, reliability has not been one.

A person asks a question of to vehicles and it degenerates into other makes. I am sure thee op has looked at the price range and suitably of other ones an has asked a simple question.

As he knows both will tow that van easily.

He doesn't want to know about the latest big banger V8 cruisers that also have some serious problems. he wants to know about an Everest and a Jeep and I can't give him anything on the jeep, except a few owners I have met have had some substantial problems around overheating. To be fair that was over 18 months ago and things might have changed since then.

I can't comment on the Jeep but research does show they still have reliability problems. Now the Everest has the odd issues, mainly around the auto box, I have the same box with no problems. The engine is strong and will tow that van with ease with good fuel consumption and little stress at that load.

Hi Eagle when you say good fuel consumption what sort of fuel figures are you getting knowing that these will be indicative figures depending on speed, terrain and weather conditions.

Umm, you say he only wants to know about two 4wds, then you add a sentence about the "other" 4wd that was being talked about.....of which seems to be a comment that you made up ??

My reference to the "other" tow vehicles was more of a reply to the assumption that these small engine 4wds will tow that amount of weight with ease ?? Tow them legally, but with ease ?? Nup.....

The Everest fuel should be around the same as my ranger, as they have the same box and engine. My vehicle is fairly heavy at around 3 tonne plus the 2.5t for the van. I average between 16 and 17 litres towing at 100 kph and 9.5l on the highway. Weight and the bullbar increase the fuel usage by around 1 litre per hundred K's.

Yes Gronk I did mention the cruiser as I said he didn't want to know about other vehicles, he wanted to know about 2 specific vehicles. I believe it was you who mentioned V8 nissan and 200 series.

You are also very wrong about tow vehicles towing over 2 tonne. Mine tows 2.5t with ease and has plenty of poke with that weight on the back. From most of the owners of 200 series that pull around the same full size van weight, they all come up with an average around 20l/100 while towing. Then again some come with 13l and 14l/100. Those ones go in one ear and out the other. Many also include all the side trips without their van and claim that as their average.

I'm very wrong ?? Your Everest tows 2.5T with ease ? Sorry, while you may believe so, one persons idea can be completely different to anothers.
Can you sit on 100 k/ph and pull out and overtake a car going up a steep incline ?
Or is your idea of ease to tow along a flat outback road at 90 k/ph ?

See how hard it is to say your 4wd tows with ease ?

I don't believe my 200 series would tow 2.5T with ease. Yes, 1.5T is pretty easy, but I couldn't do 1/2 the things if it was 2.5T...

BUT, if I had to downgrade from a 200 series, the Everest would be my no1 choice !!

No my definition of ease is for all conditions and terrain. If you run a truck bobtail it does it with ease, if you run a truck fully loaded it also does it with ease but does it have an impact on acceleration of course it does but it is still doing it easy with that load on the back.

Why on earth wold you want to overtake 100kph with a van on the back, well my answer is never, so that doesn't even cross my mind when it comes to the word ease. Can I overtake up a steep incline from a lower steed, well to start with if the vehicle in front was travelling at 90 then no, because there is no reason to and that comes from a lot of years of patience and not placing the vehicle under unnecessary load. If the vehicle in front was travelling at 80 then maybe I would and I can.

I have overtaken another van up the hill on the Newell north bound just after he Mendooran turn off which is pretty steep and it was done with ease.

Does it have the torque of a 200, no. Would I be happy towing a single trailer at 40t gcm with 450HP yes, would I be happy towing b double at 65t with 450hp no.

That Everest with 2.5t on the back will tow it with ease. 470nm of torque is plenty for that weight.

I guess you don't need a cannon to shoot quail.

With that sort of logic, I'd say a Nissan X Trail would tow 2.5T with ease as well !!

Like I said I don't overtake at 100kph as I am very happy that the driver in front is travelling at a good speed. That is why I don't overtake, but I can if I break all the patience and commonsense rules I have lived by over the years.

Many years of 100kph limited have taught most blokes that when a caravan passes you at 100 you will see him up the road sooner than later.

Now any info on Jeep or Everest

The Jeep l have has been good only done 28k though, not sure the Grand Cherokee has been updated any time recently unlike the one I'm driving now. To much money to outlay to make the wrong decision so will probably not go the Jeep way again.

HI
My 200 series when towing I get 17-19l/per 100k (2.5T) I brought the standard model a bit over seventy grand.no bells and whistles
around town fuel is 11.5 per 100k .
The everest is a 6cyld I presume which the fuel will be close not towing.
I would not go back to a 6cyld after this vehicle with ample power and towing capacity best to have more up your sleeve and be safe and legal .
PS a lot depends on the pocket also.
Happy touring what ever you buy
Cheers
