Hi all, I am thinking of doing Googs Track in late April & was wondering what the condition of the track is. Is this a good time to go, or should I leave it till later. Any information would be most helpful. Thanks, Denis.

Googs is not going to change any more than any other mainly sandy track. Hot and sand is a bit hungrier. Wet and it is way easier. April is a pretty good time of year. I'd just do it (thanks Nike)

Hi Olympic

Your best bet is to watch the weather carefully , as it is as dry as chips here in South Australia.

The dunes as the moment will be ultra soft from months of hot weather and no rain.

Once the season does brake, it will firm up the dunes and make the drive easier.

Cheers

Best months are May/June/July/August. April and September can get a bit hot and uncomfortable but a lot of it is the luck of the draw.
A lot more people are towing trailers up Googs and it also gets chewed out by people who don't lower tyre pressures enough. We'd normally have below 20 psi in our tyres and take it easy up the dunes.

I agree with tyre pressure Phil, did GRR @ 20psi, no problems with 2in lift @ OME suspension. A mate who went with us was a stickler for full tyre pressure as he said that if you lowered the pressure you'd do the sidewalls. Guess what, he fractured his fuel tank & was in big trouble. Cost him a lot of down time & BIG money.

Hehe they live and learn.
The only time I've damaged sidewalls was running 18psi on the Anne Beadell Highway in a 43 degree heatwave at the end of October one year. Went on and did most of the Gunbarrell, Hunt Oil Rd and a few other tracks - found a couple of sidewalls were a bit puffed out when we got home and Goodyear replaced the tyres under warranty - they said it shouldn't happen to a quality offroad tyre.
I'd rather risk a tyre than trash the car.

Hi Dennis,
I will be tackling the track possibly the last weekend of April whilst heading to Alice from Adelaide with my Tvan.
Max Tracks and correct tyre pressure will be the saviour of the day as well as a sand flag and radio to avoid collisions.
Might see you out there.
Cheers.

Hi Cruiser, I do have sand tracks, flag & UHF. As a matter of interest, I use the flag pointing forward at app 25deg as I approach the top of a dune, the flag is vertical. Maybe see you as I am going sth to nth in the last week of April. I don't wish to be rude, but I thought the track was only used from sth to nth .

Hello Cruiser
We too will be headed ADL to Alice end April - was considering going Coober Pedy and Anne Beadell / Connie Sue to Uluru then Alice but Googs as a start also sounds interesting.
