Article Comment: Canning Stock Route

i am heading to do the canning end of june this year heading north to south. i was wondering if i need to worry about spinifex protetion for my radiator to help stop the seeds from coming through to the radiator. i was concerned about this travelling along the madigan line in 2017 but it was not a problem at all.

Be prepared. You cannot be sure until you get there.

As Chris said be prepared. As bit of shade cloth doesn't take up much room.

Good advice above, by the end of June I wouldn't think it would be a problem. We were there this time last year and it was very bad, but that is very early in the season.

Take some shadecloth any way, I use the white or 50%, it is more coarse and catches it very well without impeding air flow too badly.

I'm pretty sure that's where I got it, a few years ago now also used it on the Madigan Line 6 yrs ago. It's a very light straw colour, 50% anyway.

jimmi,
Carry a 1 meter hook to remove any spinifex from around the exhaust and check regularly if in thick spinifex.( I did use this) I have never needed to cover the radiator. Some method of spraying water under the car, I had a garden pump sprayer. As the previous photo shows, everything is ok until it is not.

enjoy the trip

For 30 minutes work stretching a bit of shade cloth across the bullbar, the protection offered is well worth it. Make sure you pop your bonnet and run the shad cloth across the top[ of the gap between the barwork and your radiator grill, then simply drop the bonnet to hold it in place. I also use cheap $1 sponges from Supercheap to plug gaps around bash plates etc.

If you think it won't be a problem., then it probably will be. See video from out there on the Canning a few years back.

I prefer Aluminium fly screen to shadeclorh. Breaths better and is way easier to clean. I carry about 6 meters rolled up on a piece of broom handle.

Looks like the Aluminum flyscreen stayed on the broomstick. Allowing that many seeds to collect is looking from trouble and a hell of a lot of work to remove properly.
